Dentist educates kids on proper oral hygiene

Third-graders from Washington Elementary School in Marysville took a break Wednesday from reading, writing and arithmetic to learn about teeth.

The children took a field trip to Dr. Christopher Brieden's office to learn about the importance of dental hygiene.

Brieden, an orthodontist for 32 years, has had student field trips to his office for more than a decade. He started by visiting schools when his practice was new, he said. He pays for the bus transportation for the students to get to his office.

"Every February is National Children's Dental Health Month, and that's when us professionals are encouraged to go the extra mile," he said. "... I feel an obligation to give back to the community and teach the kids."

"They teach us a lot of stuff, like what happens when you get a cavity," Brandon said.

In addition to learning about dental hygiene, Brieden said he hopes the field trip will help the children be less scared about going to the dentist or orthodontist.

It’s a good thing Dennis Covey has so much space. “Because of all the costumes, there’s always a real sense of theater here,” Covey says.

Covey leads the way to a section of the studio that’s been turned into a gallery. False walls and huge swatches of fabric draped over faux Roman columns change the environment immediately, signaling to visitors that they’re about to enter a different part of Covey’s life. Classical-looking sculptures of nude torsos—mostly male— are hung throughout the space, and a few featuring the groin area of men in underwear are lined up on a table. One sculpture, a piece he calls his “Cyborg,” has been outfitted with a few mechanical parts to give it more personality.

Sculpting, Covey explains, is a natural extension of his photography. When he’s shooting the human form, he’s careful to find the perfect balance of light and shadow and capture that one, right moment. For his sculpture, Covey uses a process called life casting, and his objective is, again, to freeze the perfect moment.This is interesting cube puzzle and logical game.

Life casting begins with a willing model. Covey sends a sheet of detailed instructions to the model—don’t wear underwear for at least two hours before the shoot; it leaves an imprint on the skin and the life cast will pick it up—then invites him into a room in his studio that’s been outfitted as his life-cast lab. The model leans against a padded brace and is instructed how to pose. Covey slathers the nude model with alginate—the fast-drying stuff dentists use to make molds— then he follows up with a layer of cotton and plaster to create a hard shell or mold for the alginate to rest in. He gently pulls the mixture from the skin then reinforces the outer shell with gypsum, and the alginate piece is eventually pulled away, shattering the mold in the process and leaving one unique piece behind.

The alginate picks up incredible detail. Goosebumps are clearly visible. Tattoos, too, can be seen in some of the works. Covey likes to make the sculptures as true to the human form as possible, so when something goes awry, he tries to fix it by hand.

“Sometimes when I cast, the bellybutton gets filled in or it doesn’t get filled in, so I’ll have to contact the model and go, ‘Do you have an innie or an outie?’ Then when I actually finish it, I’ll either dig it out or fill it in,” he says.

Covey has another room dedicated almost entirely to rejects. The sculptures with too many flaws are smashed with a hammer and tossed immediately. But he takes his time with the pieces that exhibit small imperfections. He lets them hang in the reject room before he decides their fate.

“This is one of those pieces that, the model… he couldn’t hold the pose,” Covey says, pointing to one flawed sculpture. “I still haven’t figured out what I’m going to do with it yet. I may flourish fabric around it, or it could be one that gets broken up.”

If a piece does pass the test, it’s time to apply paint and other finishing, and that’s when Covey says the life-cast process moves from craft to fine art. He’s had a lifelong fascination with fabric—something about the way it flows—and has been working on sculpted “modesty drapes” that work as removable loincloths or other embellishments around the torso .

But even with the nudity covered with cloth, it’s hard for Covey to find a local gallery willing to show his work.

Liliane Lijn is such a hands-on artist that, within two minutes of arriving at her North London studio, my own pair were enlisted to help lift a Poem Machine from the floor onto a well-worn work surface.

There was an issue with this kinetic, text-bearing sculpture. It creaked as it rotated, so Lijn and a more capable assistant than myself were examining the drum, sketching the mechanism and muttering things about radial bearings.

It is the last place you might expect an artist with a background in Surrealism and Beat poetry to be. There was barely enough time to note the hardware store smell of the place or identify the pieces of industrial machinery. Lijn's latest technical challenge was too baffling.

"If you make something, you've got to get it to work. I've never been the kind of artist who says, 'I've got this idea, now who's around to get it to work for me?'."

This even holds true of a scheme to project text onto the moon. Lijn and scientific advisor John Vallerga have considered lasers, kites and lately heliostats for a project called Moonmeme. For recent work Solar Hills, they have even developed spectroheliostats to beam colour distances of 5km around the earth, .

"The spiral does something weird," the artist points out, seeming as confused as me by the two-directional waves. But today the penny drops. "Oh, I know why," she says. It should be noted that the impetus from this piece came from a meeting with the Beat author, who "intimated" Lijn might draw on his work for a kinetic piece.

Soon it becomes clear that Lijn is as happy to discuss poetry as engineering. "The only people who liked these [Poem Machines] in 1962 when I first exhibited them were artists and a few poets.

"Though not many," she adds with a laugh, "because they didn't like the idea you couldn't read their poems."

We remain very conflicted over Portal 2. It was a great game, undoubtedly one of the best of 2011, but we're still not convinced it really needed to be made. The obvious problem with this though is that the physics is strangely wonky and seems to be designed to cheat on your behalf - to ensure that if a sphere is going in generally the right direction it always gets there, whether it was dead or not. This might sound good in practise but it not only looks horribly fake but it actually makes the game harder to predict than if it was realistic.
