Eastern Cape to launch auto sector cluster in March

The Eastern Cape will launch a provincial automotive industry cluster in March, with the aim of improving and sustaining the competitiveness of the region as a vehicle manufacturing hub.

The Eastern Cape hosts several automotive component producers, as well as the Mercedes-Benz, General Motors and Volkswagen assembly plants.

The cluster will be a partnership between these assemblers, component suppliers, trade unions and government and will be tasked to drive appropriate programmes to address the challenges facing the sector in the province.

Report ties GDP to broadband coverage

Empathy as an antidote for job burnout

Roy Brasil was doing a favor when he agreed to hear a pitch about testing a burnout prevention strategy on his staff of juvenile probation officers.

" 'It's a Ph.D. candidate out of Berkeley again,' " Brasil said he thought at the time.

But it didn't take long for San Mateo County's deputy chief probation officer to realize that Eve Ekman, a social welfare researcher at UC Berkeley, was offering something unique and valuable. She proposed a pilot project to cultivate empathy between the staff and the young inmates,Plastic moulds as well as among the officers.

Ekman is among a vanguard of researchers taking decades of studies on job burnout in a new direction.

Instead of looking only at external factors causing burnout, such as heavy workloads, inadequate resources and difficult work relationships, they're focusing how workers can develop empathy to spark and sustain enthusiasm for their work. In doing so, they increase their effectiveness, even in daunting work conditions.

Emotional exhaustion, lack of meaning and sense of effectiveness on the job can occur when a worker feels overwhelmed with demands that he or she can't meet. If the strain worsens, workers may shut down emotionally to cope, viewing clients impersonally -- a state called "depersonalization." That in turn cuts off a flow of critical information between caregiver and client.

In a doctor's office, the patient senses the doctor's distance and doesn't disclose important details. The physician doesn't probe for reasons behind a condition and might miss cues showing that a woman is suffering from domestic violence,third party merchant account for example, or that mold might be triggering asthma attacks, Ekman said.

"That depersonalization shuts off so many ways that information can be passed through," she said.

Communication flowing both ways, Ekman said, strengthens bonds and a sense of meaning and effectiveness on the job, the chief antidote for burnout.

Prison guards frequently report taking "mental health" days to deal with stress. Heavy caseloads, workplace conflicts and injuries, and low pay led to stress, burnout and high turnover among parole and probation officers, according to 2005 study funded by the National Institute of Justice. But Ekman and other researchers noticed that some people worked contentedly in the same environments that burned out others.

"People can be in the exact same setting and have different reactions," Ekman said. "That's why it's so important to look at internal factors, and that's not historically been done for this kind of work."

Cultivating empathy -- the ability to understand the experience of another -- is key to heading off burnout, and that takes simple cognitive shifts, Ekman explained. A critical step is developing curiosity toward a patient, inmate or client, she said.

Realizing what a person has endured often stokes empathetic feelings, she said.

At San Francisco General Hospital, where Ekman is a crisis counselor, staffers irritated by the arrival of yet another victim of gang violence kept his mother from seeing him. But Ekman learned the seriously injured young man was a merchant mariner home to visit his ailing father when he was caught in a drive-by shooting.

"I took the charge nurse aside, told her the story, and she immediately escorted his mother and brother to his room," Ekman said.

At the same time, care providers need to keep in mind that the patient's suffering isn't their burden,oil paintings for sale she said.

"It sounds callous but they need to remind themselves pretty frequently 'this suffering is not my own,'" she said. That keeps the caregiver from getting overly enmeshed emotionally, but the recipient still knows she or he has the worker's attention and understanding.

"It's about cultivating curiosity," said Dr. Jodi Halpern, a UC Berkeley psychiatrist and professor who has assisted Ekman with the project. "But the biggest mistake is feeling like you're in the same boat."

Ekman's project in San Mateo County's juvenile probation services began in August and ends this spring. Ekman's project may also reveal where management or allocation of resources contributes to work stress, he acknowledged.

Ex-Church Hill mayor honored for contributions to fitness center

Former Church Hill Mayor Paul Morrison was instrumental in helping the city acquire affordable equipment for its municipal fitness center which opened in 2008.

Last week the Board of Mayor and Aldermen said thank you by presenting Morrison a plaque of appreciation and giving him free membership for life.

Aside from donating the rubber floor mats, Morrison brokered a deal with a commercial fitness center going out of business to acquire for the city professional workout equipment well below its market value.

“I really believe with all my heart that we would not have this fitness center today if were not for Paul Morrison,” said Mayor Dennis Deal at last Tuesday’s BMA meeting. “Paul called me and asked us to come down and look at the equipment. It’s probably one of the best community recreation facilities I’ve seen in this city in many, many years.”

In January of 2008 the BMA agreed to purchase the exercise equipment for $26,000. At the time it was estimated that the equipment would cost as much as $200,000 to purchase new.

The lower prices have had the expected effect though. In fact, a Chinese solar project developer has said that a 30% tariff on imported solar panels will make uneconomic $500 million in new solar developments the company has planned in the US.

Graphene-based transistors may be on the horizon

It turns out that, although a single layer of graphene has no bandgap, two layers do. Unfortunately, it can't be switched on and off. Researchers were disappointed that three layers of graphene didn't improve the situation.

The natural stacking of graphene provides a mirror symmetry. When you lay the first layer of hexagons down, the second layer will be offset somewhat from the first layer. The third layer, however, directly overlays the first layer. If you then apply a voltage across the layers, whatever effect the first layer has on the inner layer is exactly countered by the top layer. The result is that, yes you have a bandgap, but you can't control it.

Now, a large number of researchers from six or seven institutions have published two papers demonstrating that, if you change the way the graphene stacks, you obtain a voltage-controlled bandgap. In this work, the third layer of graphene does not overlap the original layer, but is offset even further. This breaks the mirror symmetry so that a voltage applied across the sheets will alter their conductivity.

The two groups of researchers showed this in slightly different ways. One group observed the photoconductivity of their graphene sheets as a function of wavelength and applied voltage. They showed that the oddly stacked three layer graphene sheets would generate a larger current for particular colors. That is, the light was exciting electrons out of bound states and into conducting states, indicating the presence of a bandgap. Furthermore, this color changed depending on the applied voltage, indicating that the bandgap was changing with the voltage.

Overzealous Residents Slowed Storm Cleanup

Though piles of brush left over from Tropical Storm Irene still litter the western portion of the North Fork landscape, Southold Town Highway Superintendent Peter Harris said that all storm debris will soon be cleared.

But not everything that his crews have picked up since the storm hit two months ago has been storm debris, he said.

“I hate to say it, but a lot of what we’ve been picking up has had nothing to do with Irene,” he said. “Southold Town has not done a fall brush pickup in three years, so some residents have taken full advantage of the storm clean up."

Southold Town sent out a press release in early September informing residents that town workers would help with the storm debris clean up and that residents should place brush and branches in the front of their homes on the side of the road and the Highway Department personnel will pick it up as soon as possible. The Town transfer station is also still accepting post-storm debris free of charge.

A Mattituck resident by the name of Liz commented on a brush pile photo gallery posted on North Fork Patch yesterday that “debris in the Breakwater neighborhood was dragged to Breakwater by clean up crews and left there as if the town were going to remove it.”

“I can't speak for everyone, but the tree that fell in our backyard was removed privately,” she said. “This isn't taking advantage, it's asking for a job to be finished. Breakwater has piles of debris from every street lining it.

Joanna Lane of Cutchogue said her brush was picked up on Wednesday, and the clean up couldn’t have come sooner.

“I couldn't see oncoming traffic to get out of the end of my road,When the stone sits in the Cable Ties, but had reconciled to waiting for next April's spring clean up,” she said.

Harris maintains that his crews have been working diligently during regular weekday hours (no overtime hours for storm cleanup were allocated into his department’s budget, he said) to remove storm debris, and a few code violations were issued for those trying to get rid of regular fall cleanup debris.

Linked quantum dots improve solar cells

Conventional crystalline silicon solar panels are relatively efficient, but are expensive to produce. One way to increase the efficiency of solar cells is to use semiconductor nanoparticles, or quantum dots. In theory, the efficiency of cells made from these materials can reach 44%. In conventional solar cells, an absorbed light particle usually only excites one electron (so creating an electron-hole pair).

To date, however, researchers had only succeeded in creating such photoexcited electron-hole pairs inside quantum dots. This is not very useful for real solar cells in which electron and holes need to be able to move freely throughout the entire sample. Only then can they create an electrical current that can be collected at an electrode.
Charges move freely

Arjan Houtepen and colleagues have now shown that electron-hole pairs can indeed move as free charges between dots when these semiconductor nanoparticles have been linked closely together using small spacer molecules. The arrangement means that the dots are very densely clustered together while remaining separate. “The nanoparticles are so close to each other that every single light particle that is absorbed by the solar cell results in the generation of mobile electrons and holes,” Houtepen told nanotechweb.org.

The team observed band-like charge transport in its samples, which means that the semiconductor nanoparticles are actually behaving like atomic crystals when the crystals are brought very close together. “This is exciting because it shows that the electronic properties of nanocrystals films can be (almost) as good as those of traditional semiconductors,” explained Houtepen. “What is more, the electronic properties can be controlled by controlling the distance between the nanocrystals.”

Solar panels present stellar opportunity

Students at Colorado Mountain College in Rifle will not only use energy generated from solar panels when they turn on their classroom computers, some helped get the system working.

Five students in solar installation classes at the Rifle campus recently spent a week helping crews from Sunsense of Carbondale, a solar installation company, get the 103-kilowatt system in the ground.

Student Jason Perpich of Rifle said he plans to use the skills he learned while installing the solar panels. “You hear how Rifle wants to put itself in the forefront of sustainability and I think this is the right place to do it,It's hard to beat the versatility of zentai suits on a production line.” he said. “I think I can use what I learned doing this to help give people an overall picture about solar power.”

Fellow student Roberto Gomez of New Castle said the experience would greatly help him as he earns his solar photovoltaic certificate at Colorado Mountain College. “Every job was different,” he said. “We helped set up the panels, then we helped with the electrical wiring. Part of it was repetition, but they went up fast. It was great hands-on experience.The additions focus on key tag and magic cube combinations,”

GE to Build Solar-Panel Plant in Colorado, Hire 355 People

GE selected Colorado from 10 states that jockeyed to win the business. New York lost out in the final round. GE said it will create 100 new "high-tech" positions at its research facilities in upstate New York.

SolarWorld AG of Germany currently operates the largest solar-panel manufacturing plant in the U.S., a Hillsboro, Ore., facility that produces panels capable of generating about 350 megawatts annually. GE's panels will be based on a different technology.

20-somethings revive '50s feel in updated Arcadia ranch

Adrianne and Jeremy Lentine became first-time homebuyers two years ago when they stumbled upon a 1950s ranch with a welcoming front yard. As soon as they saw its white picket fence, they were home.

"I did not want rocks and cactus," explains Adrianne, who grew up with xeriscaping in Scottsdale and craved a lawn for their dogs in a walkable neighborhood.

The young couple - she's 25, he's 28 - also wanted to be centrally located.

"It's just better made than anything today," Adrianne explains about their growing love of vintage pieces. "We like that it has character."

It doesn't hurt that the Lentines have close ties with a cool vintage-furniture store. Kylie and Ryan Durkin, who own Modern Manor in Phoenix, are their close friends. Jeremy says the Durkins have taught him the ropes of estate sales, where he has gotten several pieces.

Wisconsin temporarily suspends livestock air emission rules

Wisconsin dairy farmers will be interested to note that the state legislature has temporarily suspended the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources rules which would impose air emissions limitations and air permitting requirements on the state's livestock farms, according to Jordan Lamb, partner with DeWitt Ross & Stevens law firm.

The action affects several rules that have to do with dairy and other livestock operations in the state.

First it impacts NR 445, which establishes acceptable ambient air concentrations for ammonia for air emissions from agricultural waste (including livestock manure, animal waste byproducts, litter and bedding). It also impacts NR 406 and 407, which impose air permitting requirements associated with those limitations.We also offer customized chicken coop.

So far, the legislation has been referred to the Assembly Natural Resources committee.

The current suspension of these rules as applied to farms will expire at the end of this legislative session in the spring of 2012.

Meanwhile, researchers and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency continue to sift through a two-year National Air Emissions Monitoring Study that was completed earlier this year that gives a look at air quality on and around livestock farms.

The research team collected data from more than 2,300 sensors at a total of 38 barns on 14 farms in North Carolina, Iowa,Find everything you need to know about Cold Sore including causes, Indiana, Oklahoma, California, New York, Washington and Wisconsin. For barns, there were five dairy sites, five pork production sites, three egg-layer sites and one broiler ranch. Outdoor swine and dairy manure lagoons were monitored at nine farms.
