Last week the Board of Mayor and Aldermen said thank you by presenting Morrison a plaque of appreciation and giving him free membership for life.

My fantasies were nothing very heavy, merely, that I was going to be a famous book writer, and even a film star, as well, because all the local girls claimed that I was better looking than Scotty Beckett, who had played the Young Al in The Jolson Story, and I had no problem at all in believing them.

And because I shared my Technicolor dreams like this, without even a blush, naturally, I was thought of as not being the full shilling. This reaction was par for the course when you consider that I was unloading my stuff on people that were, right up to the time I left Ireland as 1950 landed, living still in a country that was deflated in every possible way.

In time I came to consider the very strong possibility that Katy, my mother, surely helped me arrive like a serious pain in the posterior, since she herself was a hi-low merchant, who told me so often how she was up to ninety as Christmas was upon her, without her having managed to gather the makings for the very special Pudding she was famous for, due to the lack of the all important ingredient -- money.

No matter how often Katy retold the story of what happened on Christmas Eve, her face would light up, and her eyes would shine with a hint of pride, but, allow me share the revelation. . .

She was sitting on the sofa-bed, having given herself a bird-bath, while I, having sucked her dry, was sleeping like a baby.

As she was about to rise and take the basin of water out to the scullery, the key was being turned in the lock of the hall door.

Calling 'come in', Katy got back into the sofa-bed and as she told me so often: "It was as well I did, if I'd been standing, the legs could well have gone from under me from the shock."

A tiny troupe of women made it into the kitchen -- there was nobody home but my mother and yours truly, out for the count.

The quartet of females took turns to embrace and kiss and hug Katy -- all of them weeping in the joy of reunion after a good many years. Even as the party were hugging and kissing and weeping and half laughing, they were divesting themselves of the food, and the other gifts that they had brought to wet the head of the new baby, the lucky little sleeper who was the main reason for their unexpected visit.

The quartet of middle aged women that had been Katy's companions and friends during the years they had spent working side by side in Jacobs, the biscuit factory on the edge of The Liberties, chuckled and laughed and cried in the embrace of this reunion, my mother almost overwhelmed by emotion and gratitude.

One of the one-time workmates, having heard on the grapevine that my mother had given birth to a Christmas baby boy, contacted the other three -- a natural gathering followed -- and there they were, in the door of our flat, bearing gifts that were precious beyond the gold it took to purchase them.

My mother felt blessed beyond belief about the practical nature of the presents -- chickens and ham, and minerals, a Christmas pudding, and an envelope containing 15 pounds.

When they handed my mother the beautiful shawl they brought for me, it was too much altogether, causing Katy to weep copiously every time, down a lot of years at Christmas time, when she delivered another reprise of one of the finest moments of her life.

Of course, I have no memory of that first beginning, but the story was burned indelibly into my mind by the time I reached puberty, and I often thought of it during my travels and my travails, or I would draw it up to comfort me when I needed to remind myself that I was lucky, that I had always been, that somehow, even when things seemed really dire, something showed up as though it was just part of the day that was in it.

Not a miracle or anything, just a happening that was part of the present.

I believe that my overall good fortune in life was in some way due to my devotion to Katy Rogers, whose father died from alcoholic poisoning at the age of 42. When her time was nigh, I kept up my two visits a day routine, not wanting her to sense any heavy change in how I viewed her condition. Three months earlier I had asked her specialist how long had Katy left. Being speechless is not a condition I've had a lot of connection with, but, on this occasion, I could not even make a joke to try and sidetrack this line of thinking. So I sat there, leaning forward as I held her hand, sniffing back tears that were burning my eyes.

Half a minute later, she opens her eyes again, a tiny change in her demeanour warming her eyes for a moment, and I am facing my mother, Katy, rather than filling the role of hospital visitor.

Without any preamble, she asks me, while she is actually laying down the law, "You won't go back on the drink!" It took me a few moments before I could reply and I was surprised that she could hold my eyes -- a minute earlier I had accepted that she was passed over.

I reply to her muted outburst: "Are you kidding me, Katy? I got a reprieve. Somebody was praying for me."

"It was me," she said, discomforted by the use of all her energy. "I blistered Heaven with prayers for you."

The effort caused her to sink back into the pillow and, once again, I thought she had actually passed on.

But she came back to me, and she took my hand again and she said, "Don't worry about me, I'll be in God's pocket."

And with those words, Ma lay back, and I felt her hand slip from mine. And I cried tears that had a life of their own, and I felt blessed that I had been granted this time with one of the great loves of my life.

And, lo and behold, just 40 minutes later, I was standing over her body in this little mortuary. “We have an acute lack of a certain kind of housing,” he said. “We can’t go to the next level in terms of economic development without housing.”

Thompson said people who live in university or larger communities move here with expectations for rental property.

“Until that is achieved, we will be responsible for the gap between,” Thompson said. The city’s participation is capped or $500,000; 18-months; or stabilization. Any of the three issues could end the city’s investment. In return, the city will have a 10 percent ownership of the development company.

Previously, Ware has developed by residential and retail properties. At present, he is working on the new Publix complex in Enterprise.

Ware praised Thompson, director of planning Andy Wiggins, and Mayor Earl Johnson for their foresight and work to make the project happen.

Johnson was hospitalized earlier this week for kidney stones and was unable to attend the meeting.

Ashraf - A Broken US Promise

Howard Dean, the outspoken former Governor of Vermont, recently observed in a speech in Brussels that when President Obama was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2009, he was quite modest about it and said that he hoped to earn it one day.

The President had said in Oslo in 2009, "Our actions matter and can bend history in the direction of justice."

He then went on to acknowledge that "Compared with some of the giants of history who've received this prize -- Schweitzer and King; Marshall and Mandela -- my accomplishments are slight. And then there are the men and women around the world who have been jailed and beaten in the pursuit of justice; those who toil in humanitarian organizations to relieve suffering; the unrecognized millions whose quiet acts of courage and compassion inspire even the most hardened cynics."

Indeed, Mr. Obama knew then that the honor conferred on him was something he would have to try very hard to live up to.

This coming Monday, 12 December, President Obama will be meeting with Iraq's Prime Minister, Nouri al-Maliki, in the Oval Office. Mr. Maleki is well used to doing the bidding of his ideological brethren in Iran's theocracy, protesting all the while that he has no choice but to do so. He has opposed Arab pressure on the Syrian dictator, aligned Iraq politically, economically, and increasingly militarily with Iran's regime, and violently suppressed the Iranian mullahs' longtime opposition based in Iraq, the Mujahedin-e-Khalq (MEK/PMOI), for good measure. Since 1981, some 120,000 of its members and supporters have been slaughtered.

Twice in the past two years, Mr. Maleki has ordered sectarian forces from Iraq's Shi'ite militias who were trained and supported by Tehran, to enter a peaceful refugee enclave in Iraq,If any food Ventilation system condition is poorer than those standards, near the Iranian border, to massacre defenseless and unarmed residents.

The residents of Camp Ashraf are educated intellectuals and dissidents who pose a major threat to the tyranny of the regime. The European Union and the United Nations have called on Iraq to respect the rights of the asylum seekers in Ashraf, and their choice to be transferred to third countries. Mr. Maleki, however,It's hard to beat the versatility of polished tiles on a production line. has maneuvered to obstruct the UNHCR from going forward with its refugee verification process so as to prevent the Ashraf residents from receiving any international security assistance. He is instead proposing to disperse the residents, against their will, in small groups to unknown and vulnerable locations throughout Iraq, setting the stage for their forced disappearance and murder.

The meeting with President Obama in the Oval Office is taking place against this macabre setting. Mr. Obama will have to decide whether he wants to be remembered as the Nobel Peace Prize winner who shook the hands of a perpetrator of crimes against humanity, or if he will take action to "bend history in the direction of justice."

Mr. Obama needs to show leadership and tell Mr. Maleki that the United States will not tolerate any forcible relocation of Ashraf residents and that Mr. Maleki must respect UN requests for cancellation of the wholly impossible deadline of 31 December so that the UNHCR can process the 3,400 residents in Ashraf.

Mr. Obama can also begin by removing a major obstacle for a peaceful resolution to the Camp Ashraf crisis. Given the politically motivated designation of the MEK/PMOI as a Foreign Terrorist Organization back in 1997 when the US hoped for an opening with Tehran over its nuclear weapons development, it would be almost impossible for Mr. Obama to sound serious to Mr. Maleki while such an unjust designation stands. Britain and the EU were ordered by the courts to de-proscribe them in 2008 and 2009.

The designation stigmatizes the Camp Ashraf residents, provides a convenient excuse for Mr.which applies to the first offshore merchant account only, Maleki to massacre them openly as he implied in an opinion piece in The Washington Post on December 5th, obstructs their resettlement to third countries, and bestows on the United States the dubious honor of being in concert with Iran's tyranny in considering the MEK as terrorist.

As Elizabeth Ferris, Co-Director of the Brookings Institution's LSE Project on Internal Displacement, recently said in a Congressional hearing, "The US role is key. If the US is unwilling or unable to accept cases [of Ashraf residents] for resettlement, then other countries will find it difficult or impossible to accept them.he led PayPal to open its platform to Piles developers."

Budding young entrepreneur Alexandra Mosher has turned her passion for jewellery design into a thriving business in the space of just over five years.

The up-and-coming artist has managed to balance her ides and flair with her business and marketing skills to create a truly Bermudian brand through her original and unique pieces.

And like a very good business person, Ms Mosher has realised the value of her bank in helping to launch her business.

Halloween revelers trash Arcata Plaza; police arrest nearly 30 people

Stan Shaffer walked the Arcata Plaza with a leaf blower on his back the morning after Halloween, sweeping garbage and other debris into piles. He and other city employees had already picked up enough trash to fill more than 30 large bags.

Every now and then, Shaffer stooped over and picked up shards of glass revelers had left behind in the gutter. Revelers also scattered glass on the sidewalks and in the planters and the grass. Bottles that hadn't been broken were left for city employees to gather.

Arcata police arrested nearly 30 people in the downtown area Monday, the majority on suspicion for public drunkenness, said Police Chief Tom Chapman. Officers responded to more than 100 calls for service, including seven alcohol-related medical calls in downtown Arcata. One drunken man sustained a compound fracture to his ankle after jumping off the roof of the Alibi, Chapman said. Other medical calls included two people with head injuries and two others who had passed out and were unresponsive.

People began congregating on the Plaza at about 9 p.m., Chapman said. City staff will meet on Wednesday to decide what to do about the vandalism and how it can be prevented in the future, Mendosa said. He also said it's likely the Arcata City Council will want to discuss the extent of the vandalism at its Wednesday meeting.

Mendosa said New Year's Eve and Halloween are two times when vandalism and public drunkenness on the Plaza becomes a problem. But the amount of broken glass left behind by the revelers on Monday creates more of a hazard.

”This is just inexcusable,” Mendosa said. “I find myself being angry and outraged over the level of destruction. I hope when the people who did this sober up, I hope they feel very ashamed of themselves.”

Brenda Williams, owner of Delilah's Hair Styling who has been in Arcata for 37 years, was one of the business owners helping to clean up on Tuesday. Not only was trash left everywhere, she said, the revelers trampled the flower beds and smashed the plants.

Just who should or should not be a payment card-accepting merchant is a question that sprang up more than a decade ago when PayPal Inc. appeared on the scene. Debate about it rages on today in the era of Square Inc. and other processors signing hundreds of thousands of tiny merchants for mobile-payment services, many of them part-time businesses or even individuals who only occasionally sell goods.

In an informal poll of about 300 merchant-acquiring executives at the Electronic Transactions Association’s Strategic Leadership Forum last week in Chicago, 80% of respondents disagreed with the statement, “Traditional acquirers/processors should not be concerned by Square and their model.” And asked whether they agreed with the statement, “Internet payment service providers (IPSPs) like PayPal are a direct threat to acquirers and card brands,” 70% said yes and 30% said no.

Former churches look for buyers to provide afterlife

The recent news that Central Presbyterian Church plans to close and put its 151-year-old Downtown building up for sale highlights the fact that churches are bought and sold just like secular buildings as neighborhoods and populations change.

A quick search of central Ohio real-estate listings by NAI Ohio Equities last week showed dozens of churches for sale, from large, historic stone structures to modest brick buildings dating from the 1950s.

Churches can offer dramatic, beautiful architecture in highly visible urban locations, but they also can pose unusual challenges.

“Adding a commercial kitchen and restrooms and creating a flow for the restaurant; it’s all a little tricky in an older structure like this, but I think the benefits outweigh the downside,” said Kamal Boulos, owner of the Refectory restaurant, which has occupied a former church building on Bethel Road on the Northwest Side for 35years.

“I think we have a physical facility that’s very unique; it’s a tremendous asset,” Boulos said.

Still, he’s not rushing to try to replicate the restaurant’s success. “We’ve been contacted by real-estate agents over the years wanting to know if we’re interested in buying another church. I guess they figure, you did it once, you’d want to do it again,” Boulos said.

In 2006, investors bought a historic former Baptist church Downtown on Broad Street, with a deal to lease it out for use as a nightclub and restaurant, which opened as the Bar of Modern Art — BOMA. Attorney and developer Bret Adams and his business partners spent $5 million to buy and renovate the property.

“The bones of the building were in good condition, but it was very expensive just to bring it up to code for use as a nightclub,” Adams said. “It had no air conditioning, a very old heating system, and it needed a fire-suppression system.”

The venture was extremely successful at first. “The first New Year’s Eve, the operator was carrying trash bags of cash out of the building,” Adams said. “It was off the hook.”

But as the novelty wore off and the recession hit, the business faltered. Adams said the investors realized they needed a “multi-use” model, not just a restaurant and nightclub in the building.

A year ago, BOMA changed to the Bluestone and became a special-event and concert space. Adams said the venue is successful, attracting concerts, fundraisers and weddings.

“It’s a great aesthetic project, and it’s great for Downtown,” Adams said.

“I just wish we’d been more proactive about changing the model earlier.”

Wilson said he hopes the church could have a future as a performance space because it’s been used frequently for concerts.
