Babes in Turkland: Unsung Bursa

After three nonstop days of traveling, from LAX to Frankfurt and Atatürk airports, then to Sultanahmet, Tarlabas and the clubs in Taksim, then Haydar Pasa, Gebze and Eskihisar and, finally, to Darca and a family dinner, the kids got a well-deserved break.

Having recharged our family’s batteries with Gebze-hopping and some of the best food on the planet, we hooked up with Fatih and his car again to go across the water to Bursa. One of the great things about having visitors who had no expectations at all as to what to see in Turkey was that we could take them only to places we like to go, and not to “must-sees” from the guidebooks. We love going to Bursa, and while lots of tourists go to there, they are usually on the way to or from somewhere else, from points north or south. While Bursa is changing as much as Istanbul in terms of the huge Ikea near the bus station and several multi-story malls in the chic, modern downtown, there is enough of the old Ottoman capital left to make it a destination all on its own. We only had a day’s trip planned; we chose our favorite few things so that we’d all have time to enjoy them.

This week in Singapore saw intense debates and discussions in two areas, namely the pay of our political leaders and entry tests for children’s admission into tuition centres. The former topic concerns our current leaders, the latter our future leaders. When looked upon as a single subject, it produces certain disturbing trends which will no doubt plague our nation’s soul, as it already have, to a deeper level.

Under TLL’s Future Leaders Program , it boasts of comprising “landmark student leadership and academic development events to give your child a head-start in the corporate world.” The insane focus on the “corporate world” that these children are supposedly undergoing quality training for is a major problem. Is this what education stands for?

However the worrying problem is the overwhelming emphasis on future success in financially rewarding careers. In our society, education is looked upon as a mean to financial ends. There are a multitude of calls for this unhealthy manner of benchmarking the salaries of our political leaders to the corporate world to be abolished. How possible is it in this environment?

Let us be realistic and recognise that the best students who excel academically and non-academically are often very successful in their adult life. In terms of ability, they no doubt fit the bill in occupying a stressful and intellectually challenging position of a political leader. A cursory glance at our political leadership reveals men and women of outstanding resumes. Replete with Ivy League and Oxbridge pedigree, our leaders are often scholarship awardees at the same time. Visitors from Maine come calling in Sutherland

It got cold, 31 degrees one morning, 32 the next and what a frost. The ground, the cars, the roof, everything was white. I had a hot fire to keep me warm. The wood the Hartmans brought me hit the nail on the head.

Our guests from Maine, the Thompsons, came last Wednesday, 11 of them in two vans and did we ever have a blast. I can't remember having a better time. We sure laughed enough and Della Mae, my wife, had a gourmet meal. Everyone sure put the food away. I guarantee you, no one went hungry. The Thompsons are great folks. We met them 15 years ago and it has been a grand blessing to know these good folks. We hope they will return soon. They want us to come to Maine, but I am not able to travel and never did like to travel when I was able. They live in the town of Port Clyde. We have talked so much about it I feel like I've been there. It was a grand occasion to have one dear family, the Thompsons, down to visit us.

Thanks to Catherine Williams and Evelyn Ferguson, both dear neighbors of mine, who brought me two delicious sweet potato pies for the holidays. They were delicious, couldn't have been any better. Those gals can cook and they are good to me.

Thanks to my sweetheart, Edith Wilson, for the 14 cases of fruit jars she brought me. I will use them with my bear gumbo. One jar is so high now. I sold them for $3.95 a dozen. Now they are around $12 and that's so high it makes it too expensive to can anymore. Edith, again thanks, you made my day. I've got the jars put away at the cabin for future use.

Things are steadily going up in the stores. What can we do? Nothing, absolutely nothing. Things are so bad it's been rumored the tooth fairy has filed for bankruptcy. I would doubt it. Look at gas, it once sold for 15 cents a gallon now its $4.09 a gallon. When will it stop? Remember what I said 10 years ago, there's such a thing as killing the goose that laid the golden egg and that is certainly true. How and what is the working man going to do? We cannot live by the rich man's standards. I wish I had the means. We can't continue to go like we've been going. Something has got to give.

My son Jonathan got the monster groundhog we have been after at the museum. What a groundhog, a beauty. I know he had to be right around 20 pounds. The children sure had a grand time for Halloween and did they get the candy. The children love their trick and treating and it does me good to see them have such a good time.

We went to Corinth Methodist Church on the fifth Sunday for their big church dinner, and we sure had one grand time. I've been to Corinth many a time. The folks at Corinth are so friendly. They have the Rev. Gene Tatum as their minister now and dearly love him. I hope to go back soon. I taught Sunday school there for many years before my legs began to play out. I have been to sing at funerals and revivals there over the years, and have many fond memories of Corinth.

My granddaughters are bringing home the awards. Samantha Smith, my daughter Gail's daughter, got all kinds of awards at her graduation to middle school in June. She is really a good student and smart as a brain. The same goes for my granddaughter Emma, my son Darrell's daughter, who last week got two big awards from Kenston Forrest in Blackstone. She is a great student and loves school. I'll say it: They take after their grandpa. I don't care who it makes mad. You know we grandpas have to brag about our grandchildren. It comes naturally.

Food truck ordinance talks postponed

Any decision regarding Sacramento’s controversial food truck ordinance – which currently limits trucks to operating a maximum of 30 minutes in one spot – will have to wait, since a City Council Law and Legislation Committee meeting was canceled Tuesday.

“There’s a lot of stuff to look at in state law, and we’re trying to figure that out,” said Councilman Jay Schenirer, chairman of the committee. “A lot of it is whether it’s just legal or not.The top of the zentai is parted from the bottom in a way the time you wear it, the backless design will provide your sexy look. One of the legal issues is that California Vehicle Code protections on commercial vehicles can arguably be applied to mobile food vendor operations.

“We’re still moving forward on it,” said Councilman Darrell Fong. “There’s a lot of interest from the different parties involved in this, and it’s going to take all those groups working together: restaurant owners, mobile food trucks and us as a city.”

Conway said the legality of local governments regulating commercial vehicles is murky at best.

“There is some existing case law and appellate law that has found the state vehicle code preempts local ordinances, and therefore local governments are pretty limited in what they can do to regulate commercial vehicles,” he said.

The answer to that question is what stalled the issue in Sacramento Tuesday.

“They really want to make sure they get this right,As many processors back away from hydraulic hose , and I think they really are sincere about setting a model and giving citizens a chance to experience both types of food,” Conway said. “They’re digging deeper than most jurisdictions have.”

According to the staff report for the meeting, the revisions to the ordinance will be addressed in four areas: vending on public right-of-ways; vending on private property and any related zoning issues; hours of operation and/or time limitations; and permitting and operating requirements for mobile food vendors.

Conway added that he doesn’t think the City Council is being complacent and pushing the issue aside, but rather that it has been very busy since April, dealing with issues such as medical marijuana, Occupy Sacramento, backyard chicken coops and the budget.

Kobo Vox tablet, $200, to take on Kindle Fire, Nook Color

E-reader maker Kobo is following in Barnes & Noble's and Amazon's footsteps and releasing its own low-priced Android tablet.

The Canadian firm announced the Kobo Vox tablet on Wednesday, coming in at a Amazon Kindle Fire-matching price of $199.99. Barnes & Noble's hit Nook Color tablet sells for $249.

Kobo began taking pre-orders for the Vox on Wednesday as well, and the specs are similar to what Nook Color or Kindle Fire users might find in their tablets.

The Vox has a 7-inch screen with a resolution of 1024 x 600 that is covered in an anti-glare coating that Kobo said will make the tablet better suited for outdoor reading.If any food cube puzzle condition is poorer than those standards,

Happy birthday to me

No one knows how to bleed the fun out of a birthday like the mail carrier.

My birthday is not for another few days, but the birthday greetings started arriving last week. On Tuesday the mailman brought a postcard from the Department of Motor Vehicles telling me to enjoy my birthday, and when it was over to visit one of their branches or their website to renew my license. My driver's license won't expire until next year on my birthday, but they'd like me to save time and avoid the rush. The postcard had a cupcake with a candle on it, so I'm trying to overlook the fact that the message was a little naggy. I've got 12 months to renew. What's the rush? Maybe they think I won't make it another 12 months and want their money now. Not a bad strategy in a downturn economy.

On Wednesday, I received a birthday card, from a company I won't name, offering to talk with me about my life insurance situation. Happy birthday to you, too. That doesn't happen in your thirties and forties. The real kicker was Thursday - a postcard announcing it was time for a colonoscopy. I started getting birthday wishes on Facebook five days before my birthday. I appreciate the kind thoughts, but I'm in no hurry. I'd like to drag this year out as long as possible before rolling over to a new number - or a new plot, if the cemetery people get their way.

I wish everyone would back off. I haven't even had a piece of cake yet. That's right, I'm having cake. Or tiramisu.It's hard to beat the versatility of zentai suits on a production line.
