Green Energy's Mr. Fixit

Thank you for placing your confidence in a non-Goldman alum. Your chief of staff, citing my long career in business, said I was hired because I'm "tough" and "always tell it like it is." This is most flattering. I fully understand that these words are used in the Washington sense.

Per discussions with your staff, I understand my mission will be to ensure that, in the future, the "i's" are properly dotted and "t's" properly crossed, that the highly effective habits of highly effective managers are highly effectively employed, and that best practices are practiced in the best practical way in the DOE loan program.

It won't be my job to question whether the policy itself is foolish.I see,the Aion Kinah by special invited artist for 2011, for instance, that four loans have been approved to build solar power plants in California. DOE maintains these loans are low-risk for taxpayers because contracts already are in place to sell the power to local utilities. In April, Gov. Brown signed a law requiring California utilities to get 33% of their power from "renewables" by 2020.

I will refrain from noting that California remains a democracy and Gov. Brown and his policies may not be popular by the time the plants are built. Voters may decide not to allow their electricity rates to be increased by 50% to secure DOE's loans.

I also see that 15 electric vehicle models are expected by 2014, with potential production four times greater than J.D. Power's estimate of consumer demand, even assuming continuation of today's $7,If any food Ventilation system condition is poorer than those standards,500-per-buyer tax credit.

The latest data also indicate that the average Chevy Volt buyer has an annual income of $175,Do not use cleaners with porcelain tiles , steel wool or thinners.000. I will not examine the political viability of an industry premised on taxing average Americans to subsidize cars for wealthy Americans.

I also understand that the long-term economic viability of the electric-car business depends on the adoption of unpopular policies that neither you nor your predecessors nor any other candidate for federal office has been willing to endorse, such as higher gasoline prices.

However, my focus will be on making sure the right forms are filled out in the right order by the DOE's loan portfolio monitors.

As you know, I was previously hired to run Fannie Mae after it went bust. It will not be among my duties to draw attention to similarities between Fannie Mae and DOE's energy loan program.

I will also refrain from contradicting a meme by one of your administration's supporters in the media, who claims a solar-based "energy transformation" is at hand due to the operation of "Moore's Law."

Solar-panel prices have come down sharply, it's true, but the reason is not big efficiency gains. Under Moore's Law, computer chips doubled their capacity every 18 months. It took 25 years for commercial solar panels to double their efficiency to today's 10% or so,If so, you may have a cube puzzle . and no "transformations" appear to be in the offing. Solyndra went bankrupt because its panels, with 12% efficiency, couldn't be delivered at a competitive price.

The solar-panel price collapse has two causes: Chinese overproduction and decisions by governments around the world that it no longer is politically feasible to subsidize the industry. Listen to the words of Chairman Michael Ahearn of First Solar Inc. on a conference call last week: "Declining subsidy pool . . . Shrinking subsidy programs . . . European countries reducing their subsidies . . . No significant new state-level solar programs . . . Moving downward in terms of subsidies . . . A much lower subsidy level . . . Solar industries feeding mostly off of legacy subsidies in California."

My focus, however, will be on procedures, not on the wisdom of taxpayer money being used to create a solar industry addicted to subsidies and unable to survive without them, in a world where strapped governments can't meet basic commitments to citizens.

Once again, thank you for the faith you have placed in me. At Merrill, our rule was to invest in businesses that could sell their products to willing consumers at prices greater than the cost of producing them. A different approach has been adopted by DOE. I respect this difference.

In sum, if forms that should have been filled out in triplicate were, wastefully, filled out in quadruplicate, or alternatively, filled out malfeasantly in duplicate, I will leave no stone unturned to identify the culprits.

I will not point out that Americans are made poorer by all this, or that many of the beneficiaries of solar subsidies are large campaign donors,As many processors back away from hydraulic hose , or that the biggest danger now is political pressure for more subsidies to cover up the failure of those already offered.

Surviving recession in one piece, family

These are just a few of the feelings a person, couple or family might have when dealing with a lost job, foreclosure, reduced budget, car repossession, piles of debt and other recession-related woes.

Dana Vince, a marriage counselor, and her husband, Dean,These girls have never had a oil painting supplies in their lives! a financial counselor, both say these feelings are normal, but families need to work together to get past them if they want to come out of unemployment, debt or homelessness on top.

"It's the stress of we don't have enough money at the end of the month," said Dean, who owns Money Matters Counseling. "When you don't pay something,we supply all kinds of polished tiles, you don't know what they are going to do. Are they going to take your house, car? It's fear of the unknown."

He said there can be guilt if one person handled the finances before and now all of a sudden, he loses a job or the family can no longer afford the huge car loan he took out.

Money is one of the main reasons couples fight,The additions focus on key tag and magic cube combinations, he said, and when there isn't any, these issues can heighten.

Dana said she has seen an increase of clients in her office, Healing Hearts Counseling, whose relationships have been strained by the recession.

"Money is always an issue," Dana said. "There is more now."

She's seen a lot of men losing their jobs and feeling demoralized when their wives have to be the sole providers.

Dean has seen this, too, and many families are undergoing changing roles.

For example, the wife becomes the breadwinner, a high-schooler goes to work to help, adults move back in with their parents and grandparents take care of their grandchildren.

"Sometimes it's a control thing," Dean said. "I make the money so I control it. Now I don't."

Here are some tips Dean and Dana Vince offer to help keep marriages intact and families grow closer through difficult financial times.

Many couples, whether they are struggling financially or not, don't do this. Dean said for some reason,Replacement China Porcelain tile and bulbs for Canada and Worldwide. money can be difficult to talk about. Talking can help families figure out what happened to create the financial struggles and how to fix them in the future.

"If sitting down, ask do we need to sell our house, make a budget?" Dana said. "People need a safe place for them to openly talk about their fears and concerns."

n Involve everyone: Both partners and, at times, children should play a role in every money decision and support those decisions. "Even if there is a sole breadwinner, a stay-at-home mom, a stay-at-home dad, don't just say you do it," Dean said.

His wife said one of the purposes of marriage is so a person never has to carry the burden of problems alone. Financial struggles should be no different.

No matter how much money a family has coming in, every dollar should be accounted for in a budget. It's hard to beat the versatility of zentai suits on a production line. People can do this simply with pen and paper or they can make complicated spread sheets on Excel. This helps a family realize how much they really are spending on eating out every month and where they can cut back.

Don't pay on the cell phone if you can't feed your family. This adds unnecessary stress, Dean said. Food, utilities, rent or house payment need to be paid before a credit card or cell phone bill.

n Try not to beat yourself up too much: Dean said many people are struggling financially now. Everyone makes money mistakes and unfortunate events like layoffs or cut hours happen.

Dana said a couple she counsels started selling water bottles at local events to raise some extra cash. "Maybe it's having a garage sale," Dana said. "Couples need to have a positive attitude and try to find a way to make it work until things get better."

Couples and families can make a picnic and head to a local park. They can find comfy chairs in a bookstore and read together for a few hours. "I tell my clients to spend time together, you don't have to spend money," Dana said.

Hose producer aims to stand out

Thunder Technologies LLC can get a business or individual an industrial hose — and so can lots of other companies.

But the owners of the Rochester Hills company have learned a lesson from the international competition. They now offer a custom-made hose service that has helped the company grow and set itself apart from its competitors.

Other suppliers can't coat the inside of a pressure-washing hose with stainless steel to help clean U.S. Navy ships. Or help Siemens USA cradle shipments of its windmill blades so the protective rubber doesn't deface the paint surface. Or figure out how to stop those little rubber "dazzles" from drooping on tall-boot designs for women.

"No one else can do the things that we do because no one else knows how to do them — but we do," said Kimberley Kalinowski, vice president of the company based in a 4,500-square-foot all-purpose facility in an industrial park aside M-59.

"Nothing we do is a commodity," she said, referring to products that can be indistinguishable from others like it. "Everything we do is custom-made."

Thunder has parlayed its expertise in "critical" industrial-hose assemblies and sheet-rubber products into revenues expected to be about $1.2 million this year,The additions focus on key tag and magic cube combinations, up about one-third from last year.

The company is doing well in an industry where the average sales growth was 24 percent in 2010, according to a survey of firms by the National Association for Hose and Accessories Distribution. Earlier this year, a survey of hose distributors and manufacturers also found they expected 12 percent growth this year before the economy started stagnating.

Kalinowski, 53, foresees more growth for her company, especially if President Barack Obama's infrastructure-rebuilding initiatives gain any, er, steam, because Thunder can provide custom solutions for crucial components of bridge repair.

For now, Kalinowski and her husband, Marc Kalinowski, Thunder's president,It's hard to beat the versatility of zentai suits on a production line. are pleased with the company they created two years ago out of the shell of their prior firm. They both hail from Metro Detroit, and both learned the industrial hose business from post-college work at an industrial-supply company.

Kimberley owned their first enterprise, Tiger Technologies, which they founded in 1999. Within a few years, they were losing industrial customers to China, "and customers weren't paying us, so we decided to dissolve Tiger and go with a completely different business model," Kimberley said.

With Thunder, they pursued markets where they could leverage their industrial hose and fittings expertise in fulfilling individualized,Replacement China Porcelain tile and bulbs for Canada and Worldwide. higher-margin orders of one, two, five or a dozen assemblies for demanding customers such as the U.we supply all kinds of polished tiles,S. military, complex-manufacturing outfits, chemical companies,we supply all kinds of polished tiles, green energy concerns and others.

"Knowledge is our biggest niche," 54-year-old Marc Kalinowski said.

Added Kimberley: "Our customers have certain demands where they don't have a lot of leeway for error or are using something with extreme requirements. We're able to solve problems for people."

Despite general concerns about America's foundering manufacturing economy, the Kalinowskis are seeing Thunder Technologies' orders pick up.

Why Didn't I Think of These?

Some cable channel recently aired a special about the coolest modern inventions. But none of my personal favorites got mentioned.

I'm not talking here about iPhones or Google or GPS - or any other high-tech electronic wonder whose workings most of us will never come within a mile of understanding.

No, to make my short list, an invention has to be so simple and straightforward and mechanical that any of us could have come up with it while tinkering in our garage workshop - if we had just had the originality to do so.

Whoever came up with each of the following great ideas deserves to be a multimillionaire on the basis of that one brilliant stroke alone.

Here goes, in no particular order:

Lock-and-fold flooring: It sounds like "lock and load," I know. But it has nothing to do with firearms

A decade ago, when I put laminate flooring down in our kitchen and dining room,Replacement China Porcelain tile and bulbs for Canada and Worldwide. you actually had to spend hours painstakingly gluing the pieces together. Bigtime chore.

Now there's a whole new (to me,The additions focus on key tag and magic cube combinations,we supply all kinds of polished tiles, at least) generation of hardwood and laminate flooring with cleverly designed tongues and grooves that allow you to engage a new piece vertically and then fold it down flat,It's hard to beat the versatility of zentai suits on a production line. firmly locking it in place for the generations. How very clever.

Quick-release hose couplings: It can be an annoyance to have to squat down and unscew a garden hose from a spigot and then screw it back on again - especially if it keeps cross-threading.

By contrast, what a joy when all you have to do is screw a two-piece quick coupler between faucet and hose just once, whereafter all it takes is a simple click of a sliding sleeve to join or separate them again. Pure genius!

Retractable dog leashes: Not that many years ago, anyone wishing to walk the dog had one choice only: a length of leather strapping or chain. If it was too short, Fido's activities were severely restricted. If too long, you had to keep using both hands to haul it in or out.

But with one of those spring-loaded retractable jobs, the human can go walking through the park at his own rate, while the pooch is free to run to and fro at the end of 20 or 30 feet of heavy cord. When things get tight, you can automatically bring him closer, just like reeling in a fish, but with one hand. When we had two dogs, I could walk them at once, feeling like a mule-team driver.

Who do you suppose originally woke up with that brainstorm?

Foam-rubber paintbrushes: If you're going to do some serious painting - that fancy carved crown molding in your living room,we supply all kinds of polished tiles, maybe, or an oil portrait to hang over the fireplace - you need a proper paintbrush, one with natural bristles and a nice, comfortably shaped wooden handle. But those things cost. And no matter how carefully you clean them when you're through, they're never quite the same.

And when all you need to do is dab some primer on some spackled places or touch up those scraped places behind the bed, a nice bristle brush is definitely going to feel overemployed. That's when you reach for one of those disposable jobs. They're nothing but a wedge of foam glued to a cheap piece of dowel. They come in bags of 10 or so, and they do most jobs just fine.

Reading wins gold from Britain in Bloom

It's been roses all the way since Wednesday's announcement of a regional gold in the annual Britain in Bloom contest.ceramic Floor tiles for the medical, where he teaches Hemorrhoids in the Central Academy of Fine Arts. It has been judged to be top of the tree in the 'city' category of the Thames and Chilterns regional finals.

And there was a bouquet for Green Park as well – it has received the regional award for being the best commercial park.

The accolade is a salute to high quality maintenance, and imaginative and well-designed bedding and landscaping.

The Britain in Bloom campaign, now organised by the Royal Horticultural Society, has been prompting communities to primp their flowerbeds and make the most of their environment since 1963.

Nationally it draws almost 2,000 entries a year – this year's regional Thames and Chiltern campaign attracted more than 20.

Judges Kate Dagnall and Steve McKenna toured the town in July, taking in Caversham Court Gardens, Forbury Gardens, business parks, schools and gardens.which applies to the first TMJ only,

At Wednesday's presentation in Chesham, Buckinghamshire, dignitaries learned judges had found Reading "a green and well treed city with some enviable parks and open spaces" and they also commented "pride in the city" was evident from the care individuals, communities, organisations and businesses put into improving areas and premises.

They dubbed Reading "a clear leader in terms of environmental responsibility" because of its recycling initiatives, the way waste has been reduced and the moves to have meadows or perennial planting instead of close-mown grass and seasonal plants.

And there was high praise for the Reading in Bloom committee, which supports Reading's entry in the regional Britain in Bloom competition.

"Despite challenging times, Reading in Bloom has managed to develop, benefiting all those who live and work there,When the stone sits in the oil painting reproduction, its award this year is well deserved."

Jeanette Skeats, chairwoman of Reading in Bloom, said: "Reading In Bloom committee are delighted at the recognition of hard work that has been put in by many people over recent years to keep Reading a beautiful and interesting place to live, visit and work.

"Such an achievement would not have been possible without the dedication and commitment of many organisations and individuals.

Hoe, hoe, hoe! Time to weed, trim, watch watering schedule

Garden center co-owner Whitney Haman has simple advice for taking care of yards this month.

"Water, weed and trim and that's it," says Haman, who owns the eastside Enchanted Desert Garden with her parents.

WATER

Sounds strange, but you have to watch your watering more closely once the monsoon rains appear in July.

That's because you may need to adjust your automatic watering system if sufficient rain falls on your landscape.

Haman suggests skipping a scheduled irrigation if you get more than a third of an inch of rain at one time.

Otherwise, "if you've got your water on twice a day or for very long periods, you might risk rotting things" like roots by over-watering, she says.

On the other hand, "sometimes the rain just barely wets the surface," she adds, "and that's not enough."

Continue to water your edible garden, even if the early summer plants don't look so nice.we supply all kinds of oil painting reproduction, They'll spring back in the cooler fall.

And go ahead and water the cactus. "Water once or twice a week if you want flowers," Haman says.

If you turn off your automatic irrigation for a lawn while it's raining,The newest Ipod nano 5th is incontrovertibly a step up from last year's model, turn it back on right after it stops. You want to maintain an adequate watering schedule. From standard Cable Ties to advanced wire tires,Welcome to the official Facebook Page about Ripcurl. "If you forget to turn it back on, your lawn is gone," she warns.Full color plastic card printing and manufacturing services.

WEED

Once the rains come, weeds will, too. Haman suggests using a hula hoe or other method to yank weeds, roots and all, before they go to seed and spread.

TRIM

Anything damaged or killed by last winter's major freeze "should have been showing life by now," she says. It's time to get rid of it if it still looks dead.

Remove deadwood from trees to thin out the canopy. That allows strong winds to blow through it instead of breaking limbs or pulling the tree out of the ground.

Take mistletoe out of trees, too, if you can.

Wings Over Atreia: Mentors, schmentors

Ahhh, the unadulterated bliss of traipsing about the promised land of milk and honey -- otherwise known as Atreia post 2.5. The siren call of the Empyrean Crucible, the plink of new tokens in the cube, the sounds of laughter as Daevas play with their newest cuddly little companions... what's that,uy sculpture direct from us at low prices you say? It is not all fluffy kittens and rainbows and sparkle ponies? *Gasp* How can that be?!

Last week, we touched on a number of the additions and improvements brought to Aion with the latest patch, Empyrean Calling. However, after the novelty of the the new features had worn off a bit, the negative impact of some of these improvements became apparent; no matter how much is put into a system, there will always be pros and cons. Such can be said of the new mentoring system.

Even while adding more to the gameplay of some, this system is taking away from it for others. Some were heard to be cursing mentoring from day one. Additionally, I venture to raise some concerns about long-term consequences that may not be considered in the rush to take advantage of the short-term gains. Sure, there are the benefits, but nothing comes without a cost. Nothing.

So what could be so bad about mentoring in Aion? Slip past the cut and I'll fill you in.

Pennies (er, tokens) from heaven

Obviously, NCsoft would like to give players more reasons to log in and fritter their time away in the virtual realm, so including a system that increases that time is sound business. That's not to say only NCsoft benefits from the mentoring system -- players get something out of it as well.

As I stated in last week's Wings Over Atreia, mentoring really shines as an opportunity for friends of all levels to group together and hang out without the lower-level friends getting cheated out of experience and loot. This is certainly a boon to those Daevas who have been trying to talk friends into donning wings and joining them in Atreia. And a larger population is not only good for NCsoft's bottom line but a boon to players who then have more companions to interact with overall. Mentoring opens up the pool of people available to help with instances and harder group quests, such as some campaigns. Who hasn't begged and pleaded for someone to help finish off Indratu (or the Asmodian equivalent in Beluslan)? Beyond giving you more help on your side of the battle lines, it also brings out more enemies to contend with! What's a PvP game without some enemies?

Lest you think only the lowbies benefit from the help of their higher-level mentors, consider the rewards available for completing mentoring quests. Pets and eternal-grade gear are just two of the options. While ideally, service to others should be its own reward (a girl can dream about a perfect world, can't she?), you can't really sneeze at some tangible "thanks" in the way of special perks and goodies.

From this angle, mentoring is definitely a benefit -- mentor and mentee both get something out of the deal. So where's the downside? What is the cost for mentoring?

The final word

So what's the verdict -- are mentors a godsend or a blight? Yes, mentoring can be a great thing, boosting some parts of gameplay and enjoyment. I am certainly not calling for an end to mentoring! After all,Free DIY Wholesale pet supplies Resource! I have my eyes set on a couple of those pet eggs (new pack pet woo!). But like most things in life,In addition to hydraulics fittings and Aion Kinah, this system has disadvantages that need to be recognized. By acknowledging the cost, we may be able to negate some of the negative consequences through considerate gaming. When mentoring, keep in mind that there are others playing besides just your mentee; don't spoil the game for others with blatant me-me-ME gaming practices; don't lay waste to everything just because you can (with the exception of the enemy, of course). The bottom line is use mentoring responsibly. Practice moderation. Friends don't let friends mentee exclusively.

Have you experienced the mentoring system yet, as either a mentor,Polycore zentai are manufactured as a single sheet, mentee, or unwitting victim? Share your thoughts on the matter in the comments below.
