Machinery outlook for 2012 looking bright

According to The Association for Manufacturing Technology (AMT), the forecast for manufacturing technology demand calls for "continued but slower growth.Handmade oil paintings for sale at museum quality," That comment comes on the heels of a resurgence in U.S. manufacturing technology orders that put the year-to-date (Dec. 26, 2011) total at $463.32 million, up 80.5% compared with 2010, and the second highest dollar amount in the last 15 years.

"It's long been recognized that analysis of manufacturing technology orders provides a reliable leading economic indicator, as it is an indicator that manufacturing firms are investing in capital equipment to increase their capacity and improve productivity," said Douglas K. Woods, AMT president. "These machines and devices are the equipment that turn raw materials such as steel, iron, plastic, ceramics, composites and alloys from their original state as stock materials into what will become durable goods such as airplanes, cars, and appliances, as well as consumer and other goods that are used every day."

Throughout 2011, various machinery and equipment producers for the plastics industry have reported extremely good sales numbers. Sumitomo Demag Plastics Machinery GmbH, said in a mid-May release that the company "is pleased about the high level of capacity utilization at its factory" in Wiehe, Germany. Tax incentive fueled?

Did the accelerated depreciation tax break given by the federal government have anything to do with these increased sales of machinery and equipment. "Our research says it had some impact on people's willingness to drive investment sooner, and to get the added incentive is beneficial," commented AMT's Woods in an interview with PlasticsToday. "This year, many in the manufacturing industry essentially had a good year compared to previous years and as they looked at their cash position and tax position, decided to make the investment, with or without that expensing ability of the accelerated depreciation. Many are in better financial position and are trying to reposition themselves better with regard to taxes."

CBW's Carson said, "My understanding is that the equipment has to be delivered and installed by year end, but we booked orders into the new year as of 20 weeks ago, so I'm not sure how much the accelerated depreciation had to do with it. I think there's a lot of money on the sidelines - a lot of cash - and nowhere else to go with their money, so they're buying capital equipment."

Woods noted that the uncertainty principle is a factor as well. "Company owners are uncertain about taxes and government regulations that might be coming in 2012, and this uncertainty drove people to act in 2011," he said. "There are several bills [in Congress] trying to maintain the accelerated depreciation on capital equipment, but company owners aren't counting on that. They believe in playing what you've got in your hand today. Business had the ability to invest in 2011 when they were doing much better."

Additionally, Carson said he's seeing a lot of "pent-up demand" for equipment and believes that reshoring of some manufacturing has contributed to that. CBW serves primarily the packaging and medical industries, which as far as Carson's business went, didn't take much of a dip. However, he acknowledges that he's seeing "bigger demand for automation," for several reasons: "companies that want to upgrade molds and/or molding machines and need new automation for improved efficiencies, as well as automation for new technology specifically in-mold labeling, which brand owners are adopting, a technology that translates into cost savings."

CBW didn't let any grass grow under its feet during the downturn either, which Carson said also contributed to demand for its products.A mold or molds is a hollowed-out block that is filled with a liquid like plastic, "We have worked hard to develop new products for new markets," he stated. Additive manufacturing is growing, nano-machining has become commercially affordable, and the availability of new materials, such as compact powdered metals, are having a tremendous impact.

Woods added, "The factors that are fueling this tremendous surge are the traditional reasons that drive growth in investment, but what is unusual about the current rebound is that all factors have come together at one time. This is something that's never been seen before and as a result we are seeing a true renaissance for manufacturing in the U.S."

The outlook for 2012, said the AMT report, "remains positive" due to a weak dollar making exports strong and the manufacturing base's reinvesting in the latest tools. "The automotive industry is making major changes to address green issues, which will lead to significant investments in production technology, as well as spending to support the shift of the industry's center from Detroit to the South/Southwest."

That said, Woods stated that "manufacturing in America still needs help." In spite of the number of Americans out of work, manufacturing jobs "continue to go unfilled. That is because the factory floor today is very different from what it used to be. It is awash with new technologies and processes that require advanced training and adaptable skills. We need a 'smartforce' of workers who are up to the job."

The AMT is also calling for help in leveling the playing field for U.S. companies in the global marketplace "by eliminating trade barriers, reining in regulations, and lowering taxes for manufacturers or we risk losing ground to our foreign competitors in new markets and industries," commented Woods.

Growing food in an urban environment

I would have been happier to read a more detailed study of a smaller selection of the really interesting urban food projects he touches on.

During her whirlwind tour around town advocating on behalf of the middle school repairs Reed said she hasn’t heard any negatives associated with the project.

On the contrary, Reed said people are fed up with the cold, uninviting Belmonte facility that some liken to a prison and want to see the students attend a more welcoming building.

Graphene-based transistors may be on the horizon

The natural stacking of graphene provides a mirror symmetry. When you lay the first layer of hexagons down, the second layer will be offset somewhat from the first layer. The third layer, however, directly overlays the first layer. If you then apply a voltage across the layers, whatever effect the first layer has on the inner layer is exactly countered by the top layer. The result is that, yes you have a bandgap, but you can't control it.

Now, a large number of researchers from six or seven institutions have published two papers demonstrating that, if you change the way the graphene stacks, you obtain a voltage-controlled bandgap. In this work, the third layer of graphene does not overlap the original layer, but is offset even further. This breaks the mirror symmetry so that a voltage applied across the sheets will alter their conductivity.

The two groups of researchers showed this in slightly different ways. One group observed the photoconductivity of their graphene sheets as a function of wavelength and applied voltage. They showed that the oddly stacked three layer graphene sheets would generate a larger current for particular colors. That is, the light was exciting electrons out of bound states and into conducting states, indicating the presence of a bandgap. Furthermore, this color changed depending on the applied voltage, indicating that the bandgap was changing with the voltage.

You have dirty, stinky grout. There, I said it. Now that we’ve laid that bare, you have two choices: You can stare straight ahead at all times, employing a horizontal take on the “head-in-the-sand” strategy, or you can get scrubbin’! Oh, I guess there’s a third option—hire somebody else to take care of it.

Let me tell you a thing or two about grout before you spend time/money and wind up with a sad little scrunched up face. Nearly all tile is bonded to the subfloor with something called “thinset.” Thinset is a grey mortar-like material with adhesive properties. Arjan Houtepen and colleagues have now shown that electron-hole pairs can indeed move as free charges between dots when these semiconductor nanoparticles have been linked closely together using small spacer molecules. The arrangement means that the dots are very densely clustered together while remaining separate. “The nanoparticles are so close to each other that every single light particle that is absorbed by the solar cell results in the generation of mobile electrons and holes,” Houtepen told nanotechweb.org.

The team observed band-like charge transport in its samples, which means that the semiconductor nanoparticles are actually behaving like atomic crystals when the crystals are brought very close together. “This is exciting because it shows that the electronic properties of nanocrystals films can be (almost) as good as those of traditional semiconductors,” explained Houtepen. “What is more, the electronic properties can be controlled by controlling the distance between the nanocrystals.”

Solar panels present stellar opportunity

Students at Colorado Mountain College in Rifle will not only use energy generated from solar panels when they turn on their classroom computers, some helped get the system working.

Five students in solar installation classes at the Rifle campus recently spent a week helping crews from Sunsense of Carbondale, a solar installation company, get the 103-kilowatt system in the ground.

Student Jason Perpich of Rifle said he plans to use the skills he learned while installing the solar panels. “You hear how Rifle wants to put itself in the forefront of sustainability and I think this is the right place to do it,It's hard to beat the versatility of zentai suits on a production line.” he said. “I think I can use what I learned doing this to help give people an overall picture about solar power.”

Fellow student Roberto Gomez of New Castle said the experience would greatly help him as he earns his solar photovoltaic certificate at Colorado Mountain College. “Every job was different,” he said. “We helped set up the panels, then we helped with the electrical wiring. Part of it was repetition, but they went up fast. It was great hands-on experience.The additions focus on key tag and magic cube combinations,”

Solar instructor Chris Ellis called the hands-on training the students received “a living lab.”

“Instead of reading the code book,we supply all kinds of polished tiles, they were out there seeing how it all came together,” he said. “They get a great understanding of how it actually works.”

“By doing our homework and locating partners like HEG and Sunsense, we've found a fiscally prudent way to tap into power from the sun,” said Genova.

Coming full circle

There was a flutter in my stomach heading up to Cold Lake, the excitement one gets venturing into uncharted territory; where originality and imagination rule and creativity knows no boundaries; where the guarantee of inspiring art, lively conversation and a bellyful of laughter sets one's mind, body and soul a-tingle.

I was on my way to see Coming Full Circle, an exhibition of new works by Alex Janvier, one of Canada's most influential and highly regarded artists.

It was also a celebration - a symbolic sod-turning accompanied by drumming and song - to herald the new Janvier Gallery being constructed on the Cold Lake First Nations, a unique and enviable venture for any artist.

Sitting in the car I remembered my previous life-shaping moment in Cold Lake.

Who we are, how we think and the choices we make are guided by the people, places and events we experience through life. One of those mighty moments for me was my first visit to Cold Lake (a four-hour drive northeast of Edmonton) 5-1/2 years ago. Accompanied by a CBC cameraman, I interviewed Janvier and showcased his art. This meeting would be a profound and memorable experience; his words would linger in my mind years later and I would break into a giggle recalling a round of his good-hearted teasing.

Janvier has a presence that fills a room - not a surprise, perhaps, considering that Morning Star, one of his greatest achievements, spans 418 square metres across the domed ceiling of the Grand Hall in the Canadian Museum of Civilization in Gatineau, Que., on the banks of the Ottawa River across from Parliament Hill. The mural - a whopping 19 metres in diameter - was painted while Janvier and his son Dean, who helped him, lay flat, seven storeys above the granite floor. The vibrant abstract,These girls have never had a oil painting supplies in their lives! hailed as a masterpiece by many, was started in June 1993 and completed five months later. It features Janvier's signature style: fine, curvaceous lines and sensuous ribbons of flowing colour.

For three days, Janvier talked about his life and his art. We wandered through his studio, a log cabin on the Cold Lake First Nations, amid a muddle of paints, brushes and canvases, bright cloth ribbons garnishing a wall of windows facing the woods to deter feathered friends.

History and story resided here along with a wealth of creativity. Two hats, once belonging to Bill Reid and Dale Auger, hung on pegs near the door, a legacy of these much-admired aboriginal artists and a reminder of the friendship they shared with Janvier.

There was a stream of stories, recounting the inspiration and root of his works and covering a lot of emotional territory: being taken from his family as a child and sent to Blue Quills Indian Residential School near St. Paul; his disdain for the flagrant corruption of land for oil and greed; and conquering a bout with Bell's palsy.The additions focus on key tag and magic cube combinations, The road map of his being was all there, traced on the painted canvas hanging on the walls.

"My painting is really a visual life story of what I have seen," he shared.

Meals were shared, along with his wife Jacqueline, each inevitably morphing into a lively exchange of ideas, philosophies and spirited debate ending with a quest for answers; solutions to the plethora of environmental wrongdoings and the ongoing struggle aboriginal peoples face.

And there were hefty bouts of laughter, weaving in and out of these intricate talks about life and art. The joking and ribbing never stopped. On our first day together, the soft-spoken artist informed me that the correct pronunciation of Janvier is anglicized, not French.

"I'm native, not French," he said with a grin.

Coming Full Circle aptly describes Janvier's new works while acknowledging the new gallery, scheduled to open in the spring. The works are painted on round canvases, embracing the drum (believed to convey the heartbeat of Mother Earth); and the medicine wheel embodying balance, harmony and interconnectedness, all integral symbols in First Nations culture.

"I think life itself is a complete circle," he muses. "You start with birth and then you make the round and with death you are reborn in the spirit world. You know, it's easy to figure out. You never see a square Earth or a square moon or a square sun. Nature teaches us how to think."

Janvier says aboriginals have been isolated in the Canadian art world, even by the Canada Council. He refers to the council's response to his grant inquiry in 1965: "I'm sorry but you are not a taxpayer."

He adds, "Coming Full Circle is a cultural full circle. There are more and more natives that have turned that circle around."

The title also perhaps hints that Janvier's work is returning home,It's hard to beat the versatility of zentai suits on a production line. to the place where he was born and continues to live today.

"Both Alex and I always wanted to build our own gallery on the Cold Lake First Nation," says his wife, Jacqueline. "We both wanted a permanent home for the permanent collection.Replacement China Porcelain tile and bulbs for Canada and Worldwide."

20-somethings revive '50s feel in updated Arcadia ranch

Adrianne and Jeremy Lentine became first-time homebuyers two years ago when they stumbled upon a 1950s ranch with a welcoming front yard. As soon as they saw its white picket fence, they were home.

"I did not want rocks and cactus," explains Adrianne, who grew up with xeriscaping in Scottsdale and craved a lawn for their dogs in a walkable neighborhood.

The young couple - she's 25, he's 28 - also wanted to be centrally located.

"I feel like it almost takes you back in time,It's hard to beat the versatility of zentai suits on a production line. with the citrus trees, the grass," Adrianne says of their Arcadia neighborhood in Phoenix, where even at the height of summer, people are out walking and talking to their neighbors.

Unfortunately, the foreclosure home's interior was also frozen in time.

"We just love making our home ours," she says. "It's a huge, common hobby for us."

The home has a vintage-chic vibe. Crystal chandeliers and antique pieces mix with industrial-metal furnishings, giving the home both warmth and style.

For the first four or five months the couple owned the home, Adrianne says they went without cable television and Internet service so they could focus on improvement projects.

One of their biggest DIY projects was moving a laundry room and opening up the galley kitchen. Now, a great room makes the home's roughly 2,The additions focus on key tag and magic cube combinations,000 square feet feel spacious.

The couple turned the kitchen into a focal point of their great room, adding a cream-granite-topped island and facing the north kitchen wall with reddish-brick veneer.

Adrianne says that idea came from their love of urban loft spaces with exposed brick.

Jeremy turned the vertical card catalog into a gorgeous horizontal piece by taking it apart and creating a base. Then they painted it white and distressed it. It's now topped with a vintage radio, and an ornate gold mirror hangs above it.

This Old House magazine mentioned the innovative buffet in its July issue.

Also in the dining room, the couple turned a drafting-table base into a dramatic wood dining table and paired it with an eclectic collection of vintage chairs.

"It's just better made than anything today," Adrianne explains about their growing love of vintage pieces. "We like that it has character."

It doesn't hurt that the Lentines have close ties with a cool vintage-furniture store. Kylie and Ryan Durkin, who own Modern Manor in Phoenix, are their close friends. Jeremy says the Durkins have taught him the ropes of estate sales, where he has gotten several pieces.

Bartlett said the company had actively scouted a plot totaling several hundred acres just west of Mohawk Park.

While Solyndra's board of directors would have made the final decision, the filing noted that if Tulsa was determined to be reasonably equivalent to the top-ranked location determined by the third-party firm, the management would recommend Tulsa as the location.

Bartlett said the Solyndra's investigation of the Tulsa site was "serious," although officials kept their inquiries quiet.

"There weren't too many people that really knew about it very much," he said. "It wasn't well publicized, probably to prevent speculation to drive land prices up, and to prevent false hope."

Bartlett said work into the potential Tulsa site lost steam over the months because of Solyndra's financial problems.

Solyndra filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy Sept. 6, laying off its entire work force of 1,100. Company officials say the Chinese solar panel industry, helped by subsidies from that nation's government, have undercut the market for U.S.-made solar products.

On Monday, creditors of the company asked U.Save on Bedding and fittings,S. Bankruptcy Judge Mary Walrath to delay an auction of the company's assets four weeks to the end of November, saying a quick sale could push down the price.

CCIA's solar proposal a step closer to reality

City and county officials voted Tuesday to move the Cumberland County Improvement Authority's massive solar-panel project proposal to the next step.

The Improvement Au-thority plans to build nearly three-dozen solar panel arrays to substantially reduce utility costs for government facilities across the county.

A request-for-proposal period seeking one developer to construct the solar arrays started last week.

Should the idea pan out, 10 different entities, including city and county government properties and area public schools, will have a total of 34 solar arrays that together generate 10 to 12 megawatts of energy, CCIA recycling coordinator Dennis DeMatte said.

The Cumberland County Board of Chosen Freeholders and Vineland City Council each unanimously approved a resolution at their Tuesday meetings to allow the Improvement Authority to apply to the state's Local Finance Board to seek a bond for the project.

"It's a step in the process," Freeholder Director William Whelan said.

The board's approval doesn't mean the county is authorizing the Improvement Authority to borrow its money, Whelan clarified.

DeMatte has said the government entities in-volved would not be on the hook for costs.

Vineland Councilman Doug Albrecht said he is concerned that if the project doesn't work,The same Air purifier, cover removed. the authority would increase its tipping fees to make up for any loss.

"I'm not putting us on any commitment to do this further until they show us the numbers," he said.
