Tyka and his friends started talking about building a giant Rubik's Cube two-and-a-half years ago. And with the help of 60 volunteers and a $10,000 budget, the Groovik's Cube was ready for Burning Man.
“We were kind of blown away by how good it looked,” he said. “When it was lit up, it looked like it was floating in the sky.”

But by the second day, players were strategizing, utilizing Rubik's Cubes as guides and runners to tell them what was happening on the far side of the cube.
“Burning Man is a fairly geeky event, so we were expecting people who could do Rubik's Cubes well,” Tyka said.
The record for solving the Groovik's Cube at Burning Man was 50 minutes.
At the Pacific Science Center, the first venue outside of Burning Man to host the Groovik's Cube, Tyka will be making things a little simpler. Players can control all three axes themselves or team up with friends, and there will be an option to set the puzzle only a few moves from its solution.
Tyka said he and the Groovik's Cube team wanted more exposure for their creation and spent a few years looking for an appropriate venue. They are thrilled to be able to present it at the Science Center, he said.
