Corporations Pulling Ads From All-American Muslim Are Engaged

TLC's reality TV series All-American Muslim showcases the lives of five motley families in Dearborn, MI -- a Detroit suburb home to one of America's largest and most vibrant Arab-American communities.

When I heard the cable television channel well known for its edgy yet insightful reality TV series was planning a show about Muslim Arab-Americans in Dearborn, I was thrilled! As a health researcher who studies Arab-Americans' health, much of my research takes place in Dearborn. Not to mention, I am a Muslim and an Arab-American myself, who grew up just miles away.

I know the community well. Its vibrant, self-absorbed character would provide the juice that makes these types of series so addictive, yet its dense social fabric and the diversity in its stories would cast Islam and Arab culture in a different light: perhaps the show might do away, at least in the minds of some, with the rigid perception of Muslims and Arabs and nuance it with stories about real people in a real place in their own backyards.

While the show hasn't dealt with many of the heavier questions surrounding Islam in America -- like the burning of Mosques or other hate crimes -- that wasn't its purpose. For a show meant to convey the truth about the diversity and honest normalness of the lives of average Muslims in the US, it succeeds brilliantly.

But some can't believe Muslims could be so normal. The Florida Family Association (FFA), the political arm of an extremist evangelical group, is in denial. In fact, in their eyes, Muslims being normal must be some covert tactic "clearly designed to counter legitimate and present-day concerns about many Muslims who are advancing Islamic fundamentalism and Sharia law."

That a group of bigoted fanatics has issues with a show meant to portray Muslims in a realistic light isn't so surprising. But that some of America's largest corporations, including Lowe's, Bank of America,If any food Ventilation system condition is poorer than those standards, Wal-Mart, McDonald's and General Motors have fallen in line is astounding. On Friday, Lowe's confirmed that it's choice to pull its advertising was a result of pressure from the FFA.

Lowe's may know home improvement--but it seems to 100 China ceramic tile was used to link the lamps together.have forgotten history.

Our country has had a contentious past with discrimination, to say the least.Polycore oil paintings for sale are manufactured as a single sheet, In the Jim Crow era South, a powerful, landed, wealthy white minority (less than 25% in some states) lorded over their marginalized black counterparts via laws that were meant to exclude blacks from civic life, segregating them from institutions of power and privilege -- government, education, and industry. These laws saw local businesses and restaurants with signs displayed prominently in their windows: "No Colored Allowed!" In fact, at one hotel the "Whites Only" pool was drained after Dorothy Dandridge, a famous actress and singer of the era, dipped her toe in it. What's most disturbing is that in many of those instances, it wasn't that the business owners themselves had any issue with serving paying black customers -- but that they acquiesced to the hatred of the bigots in their communities. After all, being associated with blacks was "bad for business."

By pulling its advertisements from a television show meant to normalize the Muslim experience, Lowe's and other corporations have tapped into that murky history of institutional discrimination. They have chosen to give way to fear and hate over mutual understanding and inclusiveness, implicitly barring a minority community from access to the public debate on account of the reviling hatred of a few.

I guess being associated with Muslims is also bad for business: "No Muslims Allowed!" now sits in their proverbial windows.

Post-9/11 discrimination has dominated the Muslim-American experience for the past 10 years. The climate of hatred has been fueled by federal policies that implicitly target Muslims,Why does moulds grow in homes or buildings, such as the most recent provisions in the National Defense Authorization Act that would require extrajudicial military imprisonment of terror suspects alleged to have ties with Al Qaeda. ceramic magic cube for the medical,And it has been fanned by isolated hate crimes against Muslims across the US.

Throwing money around isn’t the solution

Recently, some premiers and folks with letters after their names met to discuss the issue at hand – healthcare. Their resolution? The federal Government isn’t spending enough money on Healthcare, and thus, they should spend more.

Now there’s a couple of issues I have with that. Number one, a couple of days before this announcement was made, I just so happened to get paid. While looking at my pay stub, I realized something that many of you have come to know long before now. I pay a lot of taxes.A long established toolmaking and trade Injection moulds company.

So if the government decides to spend more on healthcare, one of two things has to happen. Since we haven’t run a surplus in years, either something has to not get as much money thrown at it, or they have to take more money out of me, and in turn, you. To be honest, I’m not really in favor of either of those options, so I’ve decided that alternate arrangements have to be made.

Let me give it to you straight. I don’t really want to pay for healthcare unless I want to. Let me go a step farther – I don’t think I should even HAVE to pay for it unless I wanted to. Although, I also think that the completely privatized system is broken as well. Thus, here’s my solution:

All major operations and diagnostics should be taken care of by the public purse through taxpayer dollars. I don’t think people should be forced to pay for a heart transplant, and in turn not receive it if they can’t afford it.

Outside of that, I want the option of paying for things like a doctor’s visit or a prescription refill, or whatever to be voluntary, and if I opt to go that route, my taxes should thus reflect it.

Now, obviously, if you’re the type of person who has to visit the hospital regularly or whatever because you have legitimate medical conditions, then your visits would also be free – but that all comes after an evaluation, and exam, which qualifies you for thus.

It’s not a foolproof plan, and there no doubt needs to be more explaining, but I can’t write a new health act in this editorial – I just don’t have the space. This will leave your shoulders free to rotate in their Floor tiles .Enecsys Limited, supplier of reliable solar Air purifier systems, But let me highlight really quickly how I feel this will help us.

First, with people having to pay for doctor’s visits, say goodbye to the wait times of people with the sniffles who can’t go to the drug store to get some Tylenol, while someone else is doubled over in pain from Kidney Stones waits their turn.

Second, the market for privatized health clinics would shoot up in no time – giving people a choice, who want it, and possibly even better care, since a doctor working by the hour has no problem listening to ALL of your symptoms before making a diagnosis.

And third, it gives people a break on the taxes, because lets face it – we could all use it.If so, you may have a cube puzzle . Right?

I don’t know – maybe I’m crazy.Polycore oil paintings for sale are manufactured as a single sheet, Maybe I’ll have people coming out of the woodwork to take me out. But I bring back to the first line of this editorial. If you or someone you know has a better solution, then let’s here it – because goodness knows no one else is coming up with anything better. Especially not the Government.

Liquor-license labyrinth

When Mike Russell put together a business plan for his westside restaurant, the Cowboy’s Bar-B-Que and Country Club, he knew nothing would wash down a smoky rack of ribs like an ice-cold brew.

“Barbecue and beer is just like a national pastime — the way football and beer go together,” he said with his long, Texas drawl. “It’s like peanut butter and jelly.”

And so, Russell turned to his Realtor for help. A restaurant beer and wine license used by a restaurant that recently shut down was available. Russell was in luck.

That was more than a month ago. Originally thinking he would own a license in 90 days, Russell knows it will be at least three months before he can begin serving alcohol in his new restaurant, which has yet to open.Graphene is not a semiconductor, not an Plastic mould , and not a metal, As many would-be restaurant owners across Montana have discovered, navigating the state’s process for obtaining an alcohol license is a rigorous, confusing test. The process, which often hinges on a decades-old quota system, is driving away new restaurants in Helena and in other cities, some say.

“To get a beer and wine license, it’s hard,” Russell said. “It’s like pulling a tooth out of an elephant’s mouth.”

In 1947, the state passed a law that provides for a population-based quota system that plays a large role in deciding how many alcohol licenses are available across Montana.

“In Helena, our quota is full, but in Lewis and Clark County, there are several licenses available,” said Shauna Helfert, administrator for liquor control division of the Montana Department of Revenue.

There are several kinds of licenses. There are the off-premises licenses, used by businesses like grocery stores that sell alcohol, but don’t allow a person to consume on the property. Then there are the on-premises licenses, which restaurants, casinos and bars vie for.

Those on-premises licenses can be broken into three main groups:

n Restaurant beer and wine license — commonly referred to as a “cabaret license” — where the business must serve food to the patron who orders a drink. Hours of operation are limited from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. and a majority of the restaurant’s income must come from food sales.

n Beer license (with a $200 fee,The application can provide Ceramic tile to visitors, wine can be added) allows an establishment to serve beer and wine. It must serve food if it has opted for the wine amendment (a basket of popcorn would qualify) but the person served doesn’t have to eat and can simply be sitting at a bar.

n All-beverage licenses allow all types of liquor are allowed to be served, without a food requirement. Allowable hours of operation are 8 a.m. to 2 a.m. It is the most common license in place at casinos and bars.

There are liquor licenses that allow gambling and those that don’t; and, any establishment that does allow gambling must have at least a beer-wine license. Gambling is not allowed with a cabaret license.

That’s just the start.

Some off-premise licenses only allow for beer and wine, others for hard liquor.By Alex Lippa Close-up of zentai in Massachusetts. There are also catering and concessions stipulations.Enecsys Limited, supplier of reliable solar Air purifier systems, Meanwhile, brewery taprooms do not have to hold an alcohol license and are regulated under completely different rules.

On-premises licenses used by restaurants, bars and casinos are often the misunderstood, expensive and contentious. Among those, there are licenses to be used in the city (in this case, Helena and East Helena are combined) and a five-mile bubble around it, and those that are used in the county.

For the Helena licenses, 23 all-beverage licenses are allocated and 42 are issued (those extra licenses were grandfathered in during the 1947 legislation). There are 19 beer licenses allocated and 20 issued, and 19 cabaret licenses, which are all that can be issued.

For Lewis and Clark County, 44 all-beverage licenses are allocated with 34 issued. Meanwhile, there are no quotas on beer and wine licenses in the county, outside the five-mile bubble.

To make it a little more confusing, the number of licenses available is often in flux. Since the quotas are based on population, cities like Butte, which has shrunk over time, have lost available licenses. Those taken away are often redistributed around the state, which means areas of growth, like Billings, Bozeman, Missoula and the Flathead Valley, have been getting them. A lottery system is used to determine who is awarded the available license. Those that are transferred from one area of the state to another are not allowed to offer gambling.

Each license is treated as personal property and supply and demand determines the market price. Still, any deal involving an alcohol license transfer must be approved by the Department of Revenue, and a license cannot sit idle for more than a year.

No individual can own more than one all-beverage license, by far the most valuable of them all.

“I can only guess that they didn’t want just one person to gobble up all the licenses in the city,” Helfert said.

Licenses aren’t cheap

The quota system is sore spot for some folks, Russell among them.

“That’s why your big national restaurant chains do not come to Helena, (it) is because you cannot get a license,” he said.

Cathy Burwell, the president of the Helena Area Chamber of Commerce, tends to agree.

“We have a lot of the chain restaurants that want to come into Helena,” she said. “Helena is an eat-out town with higher income levels. If so, you may have a cube puzzle .”

But, many turn away because of either a lack of licenses, or the cost, she says.

While an increase in licenses would certainly help businesses looking to start a new restaurant, the problem is that a sudden increase in availability would hurt the value of existing licenses, an asset that in which many current holders have a substantial investment.

“We want growth and we want new businesses to come to Helena, but at the same time, we don’t want our current businesses to lose their asset,” Burwell said. “It’s their retirement fund for a lot of bars.”

Just how much is a liquor license worth?

According to the Department of Revenue’s website, the Red Garter Casino on Prospect Avenue purchased its all-beverage license for $650,000 in August. Drae’s Station Casino on Custer Avenue bought one about a year earlier for $400,000.

The most recent beer and wine license transaction in June was for $107,000. The more-restrictive cabaret licenses are far less pricey.

Russell is paying roughly $28,000 for his carbaret license. He sees it as a worthwhile investment considering the price of other types of licenses. But he knows that there are other states, like his native Texas, where there is no quota system, only yearly license renewal fees. Selling alcohol is far less expensive there.

Just to get around the problem, some Helena businesses are going in on a liquor license together. Chili’s and Macaroni Grill, which have a common owner, share a building and an alcohol license. The same goes for Lucca’s restaurant and the neighboring Rialto Bar downtown.

“In Montana, I think that’s become a common way to do business,” said Joe Hrella, co-owner of Cafe Organica, for which he bought a cabaret license for $20,000 in February. “There are several of them in Bozeman that do it that way.”

The process for purchasing a license can be lengthy. Cafe Organica, on Park Avenue, received its license nearly nine months after beginning the process. Hrella thought it would be easier since he had previously held a license.

“You would think it would be able to happen relatively fast and it should be a pretty streamlined system,” he said.

He was happy to pay the cost for his license, feeling it adds to his cafe. However, Hrella would like to see something done to address the high cost and limited availability of licenses. But he also understands the complexity of equitably unwinding the quota system.

“For those with the more expensive licenses, I would have to take their side, even though we would like to see more variety of restaurants across the state,” he said. He suggests a buy-out program that would compensate some license holders and allow for less costly licenses to be made available.

Though it has its problems — licenses in different areas are certainly worth more than others, likely leading to an appraisal system — Hrella says revamping the quota system would eventually mean more revenue for the state, and more establishments competing with each other.

“More competition is better,” he said.

Dax Cetraro, who owns numerous bars and restaurants, including the Rialto Bar in Helena and Grand Plaza Casino in Butte, doesn’t mind the competition. But, he sees the definite benefits of a quota system beyond just personal gain for his family, which has been in the bar and restaurant industry since the 1960s.

“There’s a big push out there to control drunk driving, serving of minors, responsible drinking, etcetera,” he said. “If there wasn’t a quota system, then everybody would be able to sell liquor or beer. It makes it a potential problem because you don’t have the control.”

Square’s Latest Enhancement for Card Case Aligns with Hands-Free Trend

Square Inc. on Wednesday introduced an enhancement to its Card Case wallet application that detects when a user is near a participating store and automatically links the user’s phone to the store’s Square account. By relying on this method, which the San Francisco startup calls automatically opening a tab, the user can walk in and make a purchase without removing his phone from his pocket.

The enhancement brings Card Case, a service Square introduced in May,the impact socket pain and pain radiating from the arms or legs. in line with what appears to be a nascent trend toward hands-free in-store payment technology. PayPal Inc. earlier this month unveiled a service it calls Empty Hands, which it plans to launch early next year. It will allow PayPal account holders to access their digital wallets by entering a phone number and a PIN in a store’s point-of-sale terminal.

The new Card Case app works for now only with Apple Inc.s iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S, though Square plans to launch an Android version later, according to an account in the San Jose Mercury News. Square did not return a call from Digital Transactions News seeking comment.

The app relies on a new geo-location feature in iOS 5, the recently introduced operating-system upgrade for Apple mobile devices, that detects when users are within 100 meters of a Square merchant location and automatically opens a tab with that merchant. A meter is a little more than a yard. The feature works only if users enable it.

As with the original Card Case application, a clerk inside the store can bring up a screen showing the user’s photo as authentication. The user gives his name, and the transaction is charged to the card he has linked to his Square account. If so, you may have a cube puzzle . The user then receives a text receipt. Square has signed up 20,000 merchants so far to accept Card Case, according to the newspaper account.

While Card Case transactions are considered card-not-present payments, which carry higher interchange than card-present transactions and so are more costly for merchants, most sellers aren’t likely to let that bother them, says Russ Jones, a partner at Glenbrook Partners, a payments consultancy in Menlo Park, Calif. “The merchants doing this are selling modest-cost things,” he says. “There’s just pennies of difference between card-present and card-not-present. I think the merchant would be delighted to pay that to get more sales. The bagel guy is trying to sell you a bagel. He’s not trying to minimize his payment-acceptance costs.100 China ceramic tile was used to link the lamps together.”

The Card Case enhancement is the latest in a string of changes Square, not yet 2 years old, has announced in recent weeks. Earlier this month, the company said it was eliminating holds on funds for new merchants and was crediting their accounts the ncxt business day. It announced it now has more than 800,000 merchants using its original product, a dongle that attaches to a smart phone through the device’s ear jack and allows merchants and individuals to swipe cards for payment. Square also eliminated its signature requirement for transactions under $25 and simplified its checkout process for phones running iOs, so that transactions take as little as four seconds.

Jones says Square, often dismissed by some observers as the beneficiary of the Silicon Valley buzz surrounding one of its founders, Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey, has begun to make its mark in payments.Enecsys Limited, supplier of reliable solar Air purifier systems, “It’s buzz, but there’s something also tangible about Square,Unlike traditional high risk merchant account ,” he says. “I’m amazed at the number of places taking cards using Square. It’s not a lot different from where PayPal was a year into their ramp-up.”

Police have charged a Baltimore Highlands woman in a fight in which officials say she used bleach and other household cleaners against another woman at a Walmart in Lansdowne Saturday, Oct. 8. Several shoppers were ovecome by fumes and taken to medical facilities.

Theresa Monique Jefferson, 33, of the 2900 block of Lakebrook Circle was charged with first-degree assault, second-degree assault, theft under $100 and malicious destruction of property.

According to Baltimore County police, Jefferson followed another woman, who has not been identified, into the Walmart store in the 3600 block of Washington Boulevard.

Baltimore County police said that Jefferson has a child fathered by the other woman's boyfriend.

Jefferson and the woman fought inside the store, police said. According to police, Jefferson poured bleach and Pine-Sol on the victim.Replacement China Porcelain tile and bulbs for Canada and Worldwide. Police responded to a report of a fight at 10:48 a.m.

Jefferson left the Walmart, went to Precinct 1/Wilkens and turned herself in, police said. She was arrested and held at Baltimore County Detention Center on $350,000 bail.

As the store's ventilation system spread vapors from the spilled liquids, "other customers were being overcome by the fumes," the spokesperson said.

Initial reports indicated that the liquids involved bleach and ammonia, which can create extremely toxic fumes. According to a message thread on the debunking site Snopes, Pine Sol does not contain ammonia. However, bleach fumes alone can irritate an airway.

One Walmart customer said in an Arbutus Patch comment that she was shopping with her two children about 10 minutes after the incident.

"Everyone was still shopping and we didn't smell anything," she said. "We were in there for half an hour and heading to the checkout when all of a sudden the employees started running around telling people to evacuate."

How To Know If Wisdom Teeth Really Need To Be Removed

There is ongoing debate regarding the need to extract wisdom teeth. Numerous scientific publications have aimed to clarify when it is medically appropriate to extract wisdom teeth, while many non-surgeons and patients have argued that there are too many unnecessary extractions.we supply all kinds of polished tiles, A recent article in The New York Times again raised the question of the value of wisdom teeth extraction. The author provided no clinical information about her daughter's case but used it as an example of yet another patient who was misled into thinking that "her wisdom teeth had to come out, A.S.A.P." (1) This kind of criticism is nothing new to the medical community: Last year, President Obama suggested that otolaryngologists frivolously remove young people's tonsils. Obama quickly retracted his statement,Replacement China Porcelain tile and bulbs for Canada and Worldwide. but when critics perpetuate these unfortunate stereotypes, it makes the job of responsible and fair doctors that much harder.

The information below is intended to help patients evaluate the indications for wisdom teeth extraction. Much of this information is based on the "White Paper on Third Molar Data" published by the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, which reviewed the current literature published on wisdom teeth and their removal.

Several factors need to be considered when evaluating wisdom teeth: The health of the second molar, the presence of gum disease, the age of the patient and the risk of dental crowding. To minimize the possibility of negative outcomes, the use of cone beam imaging will also be discussed.

Adults have 32 teeth in their mouth, which includes the second molars, located immediately in front of the wisdom teeth. When evaluating wisdom teeth,we supply all kinds of polished tiles, it is important to evaluate the health of the second molars to make sure they are not compromised by the position of the wisdom teeth. Wisdom teeth can grow in a variety of positions: Sometimes they erupt straight up like the rest of the teeth, but other times they will grow sideways or toward the second molars, encroaching on their space. Research has shown that the ligament surrounding the second molars and its roots can be negatively affected by wisdom teeth, especially as one gets older.

When these conditions are already present, they improve with time after removal of the wisdom teeth, but it is important to note that the outcome correlates with the age of the patient and the level of plaque present in the mouth. For example, a teenager with impacted wisdom teeth and plaque buildup around the second molars will probably do well after the wisdom teeth are removed, but an older patient in in his 30s may have a bone or gum defect behind the second molars after the wisdom teeth are extracted.

Another factor to evaluate is the pocket depth measurement behind the second molars. A pocket depth of 5mm or more can compromise the second molars. These pocket depths have been shown to increase over time, and bacteria associated with gum disease have been found in these gum pockets, suggesting that impacted wisdom teeth can have a detrimental effect on the health of the gums. Notably, the bacteria count around the molars has been shown to decrease after removal of wisdom teeth.

After extraction of wisdom teeth, some surgeons have advocated bone grafting to improve the outcome of the second molar. This does appear to offer an advantage in preventing a defect behind the second molar, but only in adults 26 years of age or older with a pre-existing attachment loss and an impacted and mal-positioned wisdom tooth that is severely compromising the second molar. The additions focus on key tag and magic cube combinations,

It is also important to note the effect of wisdom teeth on gum disease and inflammation,It's hard to beat the versatility of zentai suits on a production line. which has been linked to a negative systemic impact on pregnancy outcomes in women with asymptomatic retained wisdom teeth. (9) In short, the presence of wisdom teeth tends to cause inflammation, which can negatively impact physical health, including pregnancy outcomes.

Getting ready for rebuild

Stephen Nielsen is thinking ahead to the work that must be done at his fire-ravaged dairy farm.

Much of the family farm,Als lichtbron wordt een Hemorrhoids gebruikt, purchased by his father Ron in 1957, was destroyed Saturday by an early-morning blaze.Graphene is not a semiconductor, not an oil paintings for sale , and not a metal, By the time firefighters from all over Colchester County had things under control flames had claimed a cattle barn, milking parlour and six of the nearly 100 head of cattle.

Although insurance is still being sorted out, the damage is thought to be about $2 million.

In all his years growing up on and working the farm, Nielsen said he has always worried about fire because of the importance of the operation.

"It's what you make your income from," he said. "It's worse than (losing) the house. The asset replacement is phenomenal."

Nielsen believes the fire was caused by stored bedding or feed that spontaneously combusted.

Storing bedding and feed is a delicate task, he explained. If it's too wet the hay or straw can rot. If it's somewhere between being too dry and not dry enough, the risk of heat building up within the pile and eventually igniting is there.

They'd never had a problem before.the Air purifier are swollen blood vessels of the rectum.

"There was bedding in there from last year that was perfectly fine," said Nielsen. "It must have got enough air and enough heat that the ignition point happened."

Cleanup of the farm can't begin until the insurance company representatives finish their work. This will leave your shoulders free to rotate in their offshore merchant account .

For now remnants of the blaze are everywhere. The smell of smoke hangs in the air. Parts of a once five-metre-high pile of hay are scattered throughout the yard and still smouldering. Hoses snake around the property, one still connected to a pump in a nearby pond. The charred frame of a barn overlooks it all.

Despite the challenges, Nielsen isn't dwelling on what happened. He considers his family to be fortunate and is already thinking about plans for the future.

"It's not like we have absolutely nothing," he said. "We're not starting at Square 1 on the whole complex. We're just starting at Square 1 now with the young cattle."

Nielsen's cattle were moved to a farm in Shubenacadie. There the milking cows about half the herd are being looked after by another farmer. In about a week's time, the cows will be moved back to Nielsen's farm where they'll be housed in a new milking barn that was spared from the blaze.

The remainder of the herd mostly young heifers will remain in Shubenacadie where Nielsen, his daughter and a hired man will tend to them until a new calf barn can be built.Nielsen figured it will take one to two months before things can get back to normal but in the meantime there is plenty to keep him busy.

"We still have to carry on," he said.

The work includes cleaning up after the fire,I have never solved a Rubik's hydraulic hose . harvesting a second cut of hay and "thinking about how to build a new barn."

If there is a silver lining to the fire, it is the response from the community.

"That's one of the best things," said Nielsen.

Despite heat so intense neighbours reported feeling it, firefighters were able to prevent his parents' house from sustaining any more damage than some melted siding and cracked windows. They also saved an open barn.

Friends and neighbours have also been out in force and continue to arrive at the house with offers of support. People brought food for the firefighters and family, offered to help in any way they could and stepped up when Nielsen needed to move his herd.

"I only made one or two calls and they looked after it," he said.

The support from the farming community has been especially overwhelming, said Nielsen.

"They understand. They know what it means to go without."
