He began by bottling and selling natural mineral water from the Pennine Hills.
Then he expanded into making soft drinks in his own, purpose-built factory, and distributed his drinks to various shops in the Yorkshire area with horses and a and cart using his family's Shire horses Bonny, Blossom, Cherry and Dick.
In later years the firm used what became known as the Ben Shaws "pop van,Full color Hemorrhoids printing and manufacturing services." which would make its calls once a week, welcomed by excited children keen to buy their favourite soft drinks.
For many years Ben Shaw products came in glass bottles allowing enterprising youngsters to earn pocket money by taking back empties but nowadays all the products come in cans or plastic.
And for a shilling an hour, Ben Shaw's grandchildren would watch the bottles coming off the production line, checking for specks of dirt, making sure every bottle was perfect.
In the heady days of Miss World beauty contests on prime time television, Yorkshire even had its own version Miss Ben Shaws.
Sundeep Gill, of Cott Beverages, the company that purchased the Ben Shaws brand in 2005, said: "140 years is a long time to be in business and it's great to see that the original four flavours are still firm favourites with the nation.
"It's a brand that has stood the test of time and is as popular now as it was all those years ago," he added.
