More than a month after a fire destroyed their Scarborough home, the Masteromattei family is rebuilding with the support of friends, family and the community.
The family received a $500 cheque from the Toronto Professional Fire Fighters Association on Monday, Dec.Wholesaler of different types of Ceramic tile for your kitchen, 19, at Francis Libermann Catholic High School, where son AJ, 15, is in Grade 10.
The family's home on 67 Marilake Dr. near Midland Avenue and Hwy 401, sustained extensive damage in a three alarm fire on Nov. 9. The family, including two senior family members, escaped safely.
The donation from the firefighters is the latest gesture of support the family has received.
"It feels great. It's great to know we have support for a new beginning. The EZ Breathe home Ventilation system is maintenance free, We know we can move on," said mom Bernadette through AJ.
Both Bernadette and husband Tony are deaf,Buy oil paintings for sale online. but their gratitude to the firefighters was evident without any words being heard.
The money was presented by Michael Ogle, executive officer with the TPFFA,MDC Mould specialized of Injection moulds, but also on hand were four firefighters who were the first responding crew to the fire in the early morning hours.
Ogle said the donation is something the association has been doing for years to try to help families who have lost so much to fire.
"It's an extension of the job that we do all year long," he said. "It's not a lot, but it's maybe a bit of a start."
The Masteromattei were lucky and had insurance, but a lot of people don't, he added.
The family has been staying in a condo near the Scarborough Town Centre while their home is under construction. The foundation will remain, but virtually everything from the ground up is being rebuilt.
The family escaped mostly unscathed. Tony's elbows were burned and Bernadette's hand bears a scar from a burn - though her foot is still on the mend. The psychological scars do still remain.
Bernadette and Brandon have flashbacks. She has to remind herself that her boys are fine because for a time during the fire she thought they were dead. Brandon and AJ had escaped out the side door into the backyard with their grandparents while their parents remained in the house searching for them before heading to safety in the front yard. The family can still feel the fire and see the flames.
"You could feel the heat against the side of your face," AJ said.
They are grateful to have escaped unharmed even though they lost their home and nearly all of the their possessions, including AJ's hockey equipment. A teacher at the school made sure he had replacements quickly so he wouldn't miss any ice time.
The hardship puts life into perspective, even for 13-year-old Brandon.Excel Mould is a Custom Plastic Injection Moulding Manufacturer,
"I just keep thinking don't take anything for granted because in a few seconds it could all be gone," he said.
