Cut 'will put solar energy in shade'

THE manager of a Grimsby-based company says that the Government's decision to slash solar power subsidies for homeowners will "kill his business overnight".

Jim Allen, of Ethical Solar – which has branches all over the country – says that the company will be left in the dark on December 12 when the reduced "feed-in" tariff comes into force.

The tariff, which pays solar panel owners for electricity they generate for the National Grid, will be slashed from 43p per kilowatt hour to 21p for anyone who installs a system after the deadline, which is in just six weeks' time.

Only those who have panels installed and registered before this date will be paid the higher rate – which is guaranteed for 25 years.

Mr Allen, who lives in Laceby, believes that this will result in demand for his company's services dwindling and fears he will have to make up to 30 members of staff from across the country redundant to save the business.

He said: "The announcement that the tariff will be cut in half,I have never solved a Rubik's plastic card . in my opinion, has basically killed the industry overnight.

"We are a local business and we spent a lot of money on getting registered and put a lot of energy into getting trained up and researching the market.

"Basically, after all that effort, on December 12, that could be it for us.

"It is like the rug has been pulled from under us.

"We used to say to our customers that you could invest in a bank and get 'x' amount of money or you can invest in solar and get a lot more.

"That was quite appealing to people and it was a hugely popular avenue for people to go down, but not any more.If so, you may have a cube puzzle .

"When we started up, we were the only solar panel business in the area, now there are loads of companies which offer an installation service.

"But, unlike many of those businesses, we only do solar panels – so the announcement is going to hit us the hardest.

"At the minute, the future for us unfortunately is very bleak.we supply all kinds of oil painting supplies,

"We knew that the government was going to cut the tariff, but to cut it by 50 per cent and only give businesses like us five or six weeks' notice has come as a complete shock.

"It means that we are now going to have to lay-off 80 per cent of our staff, going from about 40 members of staff to 10 nationwide.

"So on one hand the government is trying to kick-start the economy and on the other its decisions and policies are putting people out of work – it is just mystifying to me."

Mr Allen added that anyone considering having solar panels installed at their homes should act quickly and take advantage of the current tariff.

Energy and climate change minister Greg Barker defended the cuts as unavoidable if the whole system of feed-in tariffs for low-carbon and sustainable energy was not to be undermined by ballooning budgets.

"My priority is to put the solar industry on a firm footing so that it can remain a successful and prosperous part of the green economy, and so that it doesn't fall victim to boom and bust," he said.Do not use cleaners with porcelain tiles , steel wool or thinners. If any food Ventilation system condition is poorer than those standards,
